Powder Choice 4 Short Barrel .30-30.

    Here's My Dilema:
I Have Just Finished a 17.5 inch 336 MG .30-30 JM Project Gun.
Now I Need to Develope Loads 4 It.
It Shoots the Lee 170gr RNFP Very Well. (Doesn't Like 150gr Jacketed as Well)
So....This Will be My Boolit of Choice.
    I Have 3 Appropriate Powders On Hand: H-4198, LVR & IMR-3031.
So Far She Seems to Like 27-28gr of 3031 & for Close Range 20-21gr 4198.
With the Full Length Barrel(Before I Cut Her to 17.5in.)
She Liked Lower Charges of LVR w/ This Boolit (30gr)
& Had Poor Accuracy w/ Charges of LVR Over 33gr.
Also, I Can Get SR-4759 in Town. Would It be Worth Trying?
Which Powder Would Y'All Recommend? & Why?
This Gun Seems to Like This Boolit at Around 1600-1900fps.
    What Should I Do Now?

I like both your choices of H4198 and IMR3031. They have a good burning rate and fill the case fairly well for shooting cast boolits in a 30-30. I also like RL-7 for the same application. It falls in between as far as burning rate. plus it meters well if you throw your charges from a Uni-flow or the like. You should be able to find a good load with the powders you have on hand.
    Good luck.

    Thanks City Slicker,
I'm Leanin' Towards the 3031. But, I've only Got about 3/4lb Left.
Should Be Enough to Get Me Thru these Lean Times.
Just Gotta Find out if 27gr Shoots Better than 28.
Have a Box Already Loaded. Just Gotta Fix the Jeep First.
    Anyway, She's Sighted In @ 50yds & I Can Shoot Off the Front Porch @ 54yds.
Had Great Groups w/ Light Loads of LVR & Have Almost a Full Pound of It.
Got Plenty(3lbs) of 4198 & I Know She Likes It. So I'm Good There.
    Thanx 4 your Reply,

Sounds like you have all the bases covered. It's hard to go wrong with IMR3031 and a 30-30.

Think I've Decided on What to Load 4 my 17.5 inch Barreled .30-30:
    For the Box & Platform Stand (w/ Shots out to 75yds) - Cast 170gr RNFP w/ 27.5gr 3031.
For the Tree Stand (Shots to 50yds) - Same Boolit & 21gr 4198.
Still Have to Work on Loads for LVR w/ Same Boolit. Maybe 33gr Should Do.
