We went out today on the hunt for Owls. The day was sunny and unseasonably warm but very windy so most of what we were searching were hunkered down for the day. We did manage to find two, a Short Eared and a Eastern Screech.

Talk about tough to find...this Short Eared found refuge from the high winds on the side of a grass hill, tucked into the grass enclave.

This next one is the Eastern Screech Owl and is only 7-10 inches tall (17.8 - 25.4 cm). Another well camouflaged and hard to spot owl. He was sleeping in the sun waiting for it to go down before heading out for the night to hunt rodents.

    All of these are fantastic.

Granted I don't have the equipment but I can't even get a mediocre shot of the hawks that like to sit on the old tree snag in back of my house. I love watching them though, a couple of years back they had their nest just on the other side of road in front of my house.

Ann went out today to Plum Island Massachusetts on the hunt for Snowy Owls. She spied one but it was well out of range of her 600mm lens, it was hanging out in the dunes on the ocean side of the island. She went over to the marsh side of the island where the Parker River runs through and found these Short Eared Owls were very active.

For those of you that are wondering how she gets these flight shots; she practiced many, many times on seagulls first. They are plentiful in our area so she had unlimited opportunities to practice panning the camera and capturing images of inflight birds.

    Thanks for looking!

Awesome shots! I have kayak access to a nesting bald eagle pair. I would love to see your wife's pictures of them.

It’s been cold and nasty here in New England. The Snowy Owls seem to be staying way out in the marsh this year. Ann managed to get out yesterday and captured this image of a Red Screech Owl. The two Screech Owls she has photographed have been in urban area’s. They live right in your neighborhood and you wouldn’t know it.
    Thanks for looking....

Ann got a shot of a Snowy Owl, not the best quality photo due to the distance, right on the limits of her zoom lens.

This is a pretty healthy looking Red Tail Hawk we got from the side of the road this past weekend.

Another shot of the Gray Screech Owl.
