    What's wrong with this picture?

Besides the refinished wood, what's wrong with this 1881?

    What's wrong with this picture?

Looks like the seller mixed in a photo of a different rifle that has the Colt roll mark on the barrel. I noticed in the same photo that there was no forend cap showing either. Just seemed too obvoius until I thought about the "wrong photo" angle but let me know if I missed something else in case I got too distracted with those barrel roll marks.

    What's wrong with this picture?

    Marlinman93:
I am not a Marlin collector but should'nt the barrel markings on an 1881 say:
    (1) J.M Marlin. New-Haven,Conn. U.S.A. (early models)
    (2) Marlin Fire-Arms Co. New Haven, Conn. U.S.A. (later models)
Never seen a Marlin with the name Colt on the barrel.
    Am I wrong.
Also isn't the receiver at the front on each side flat on an 1881. This one in the picture may be but to me it looks rounded rather then flat.

    What's wrong with this picture?

mm93, If I remember correctly, didn't Colt take a try at lever guns at one point? Can't remember the exact title of the gun( Colt Burgess?), but could this be one and the seller posted the wrong picture, or didn't pay attention to what he hadWinchester threatened to bring out a revolver and Colt backed off.............Buck

    1881 rat

Hmmm, I smell a rat here. I think the guy got his pics mixed up. The biggest discrepancy I see is the serial #. I don't recall ever hearing of an 1881 with a letter suffix to the number. It's a trifle low for an 1881, too. In the top pic, the barrel appears to have the proper 1881 contour. I'm not sure about the bottom. Colt made a 40-65, but it was in the CLMR pump. The contour of the Colt bbl is nowhere near the Marlin's, and that's the main point that leads me to believe he attached a pic from something else. The patent dates are too late for an 1881, too. SW
Of all the things I ever lost I miss my mind the most.

    What's wrong with this picture?

That seller has had a whole slug of antique rifles on that auction site over the last couple of weeks. One of them was a beautiful Large Frame Colt Lighting in .40-60 caliber, and he had that same barrel photo with that gun. Obviously, he got that photo mixed up and stuck it with the Marlin rifle.
Incidently, the Colt brought $4025.00 and didn't meet the reserve.

You hit the nail on the head Wishbone. Most of you others were on the right track too!
The barrel with Colt markings is a large frame, Colt Lightning pump action rifle. Seems we have a very knowledgeable group here!
