Help ID Father in Laws H&R

Just over to the in laws for the holidays and found a Harrington and Richardson single shot 20 gauge on the wall, in the basement behind some boxes! FIL said he has not hunted with it since his youth (he is 80 now). I have the serial number but can not find a way to look the serial # up on the internet. I am not familiar with H&R's and I am in need for some help. There is an name on the side of the receiver. It is either Ray Plate or Ray State. The gun needs some TLC! I am assuming that it is a model that was produced. At this time I do not have a picture of it. I will try to get one as soon as I can. Don't like going to the "Outlaws" house too much! Any and all help is much appreciated.

It's a Bay State, go to the H&R link in my signature line below, in the FAQs and Help sticky is a build year list by serial number prefix.

    Quick -

Thanks for the link! Just came back from the FIL and confirmed that it is an 1941 model year. Gonna clean it up when I have a chance. Thanks again!
