80 year family history - Grandpa -> Son -> Grandson -> to the Greats

Just completed this Remington 1939 year model "TargetMaster Model 510 .22 Single Shot Bolt Action for my Brother in Law. It was his Grandpa's gun (purchased new) and has come down through the family. Brother in Law now has grandkids. Both of his sons are gun guys. So he and his sons directive for the 510 was to get it "Spruced Up". It will become a training rifle for all of the kids and a piece of family history that will down through the years keep the previous family owner memories alive and a part of the family story.

I know back in the day one of the uses of this gun was to put down hogs. The Grandpa butchered hogs for the public. Over the years it was used by the whole family around the town where they lived. Was once in the possession of an Uncle for a few years. No one really remembers why. Unfortunately my Father in Law has passed away and it was another one of the stories that never got told. Just another reminder to all - get the stories and history NOW ... because one of these days it is TOO LATE ...

Safety was sticking pretty bad and the bolt travel was a little rough. Furniture overall was solid but pretty beat up. Clean up inside and removing some burrs and rough places on the safety and polishing the bolt surfaces fixed the mechanical problems - safety no longer sticks and the bolt slides like butter. Stripped and new bluing for all. Repair of the furniture damage and a natural finish completed the Sprucing.

Either the Brother in Law's Grandpa or Dad did the bolt repair - don't know which but the repair was to stay - no changing out the bolt handle - not a consideration. History stays with the gun.

So here's hoping for another 80 year run ...

Looks super! Those were the days! I like all of the 500 series of Remingtons and planning to shoot my 513T with a 16x Unertl today... I enjoy shooting it because it makes me look good!
