    Stevens 410

I love this "guns of our fathers" forum so I wanted to share a little bit about one of my family heirlooms.

About 4 years ago I came into possession of this old shotgun that has been in my family for 100+ years. It was given to my grandmother by her father, passed from her to my older brother, and I acquired it from him in a trade. My brother was battling terminal cancer and I had a mid range 1911 that he wanted awfully badly so he could give each of his sons a 45ACP on his passing. He suggested trading the 410 to me in exchange. Who wouldn't want to trade a 5-6 hundred dollar gun for a $50 single shot shotgun with a broken firing pin. This one has way more than monetary value though so I took him up on the deal. You see my grandmother, father, brother & myself had all hunted and killed our first game with this old gun. How can you put a value on that? I have a friend who is a very good machinist and he took a lot of interest in getting the Stevens back into the field doing what it was made to do. He did a little of his magic on the firing pin and in no time had it shooting again. My first squirrel hunt with this gun in over 40 years was kind of emotional, I swear I could feel my dad right there with me again just like my very first hunt. Since then my brother has passed as well and I am the only living family member to have hunted with the gun. My brother's sons don't have any interest in hunting nor does my daughter so no idea what the future for this gun is but for now it has a good home.

    Here's a couple pics.

I love those old guns that have been in the family for a long time and the stories that go with them. Good job!

Hey Jac - there's no gun as special as one passed down from a loved one. Glad it's in your possession and it's hunting again.

Sorry to hear about your brother, but glad you got that 410 in time before one of his kids sold it for $50! What you lost out monetarily, you more than gained in memories!

Great story and a special shot gun. I love a old single shot 410. I still have one my dad let me learn to hunt with as a kid and I bought another no long ago just to keep it company.
