what do you do when you're deer or elk hunting and you want to take a grouse?

Seems like when I go looking for grouse intentionally, with the 10/22, I never see them, but when I'm out looking for deer or elk with a magazine full of loud, high powered ammo, then I see them every day.

I've been wondering if carrying a 22 revolver with subsonic ammo might be the way to go; what else do people do?

Rocks! It's worked several times for me.

Where local laws allow it, I carry a 22lr autopistol for grouse. All states do no allow that. I've also shot them with birdshot in 357mag, 41mag, and 45Colt. Basically retired my shotguns.

Having a Henry US Survival 22 in your pack is suggested. The barrel and receiver fit in the stock, it's quick to assemble and can be quite handy to have along.

I take my Handi-410 Shotgun along, it's also quick to assemble. A handy gun-bearer is also good to have along.

Wouldn't the noise from the shotgun ruin the deer/elk hunting in that area for that day?

I would think, that's why I was thinking along the lines of subsonic 22.

You would think, but if you've been in an area "where you could see", distant gunfire gets their attention, but not for long. They go back to grazing or snoozing.

I shoot them with my 30-30. Have killed 8 or 10 over the years with a 30-30. Shoot them in the head or neck. The last grouse I killed was with my 30TK at about 15 yards. Blew his head off and ate the rest.

My buddy's kid has one heck of an arm and just whack's the grouse with a rock. He's amazing. I'd need a slingshot and a lot of practice to do what he does naturally. Yes, he plays ball.

A .22 pistol with subsonics is just the ticket for them tasty critters. I'd carry my Ruger Single-Six.
