Best way to remove/fill in cross bolt safety Marlin 1895GS

Due to believing in Murphy's Law and the KISS principle, I am going to remove the cross bolt safety on my Marlin 1895GS.

I would like to fill in the empty space.

What is the best way to do this ie. who makes the best screw in plug?

Man I wish I could remember the name of the plug that's made for the Marlins. Do a search on the forum. Someone has to have put it out there.

Jim Taylor on leverguns.com wrote this article about replacing the Marlin Safety:

Includes information on how to install it as well as where to get it.

The best fix is just adding a O-Ring on protruding end piece, if you can't find any orings I will send you some.................................Marko

Their are only two kinds of people, those who own a 444 and those who wish they owned one, and yes folks, denial is bliss!

I agree with Marko. The reason is that the stupid crossbolt is actually part of the breechblock backup.

That is, they took metal out of the receiver behind the breechblock. The "safety" that's in there fits close and replaces the metal removed.

I would be concerned that a replacement for the crossbolt is only cosmetic and does not replace the strength lost from machining the hole in the receiver.

I have never seen the replacement, maybe it's not an issue. But it does concern me. The O-ring works very well, and doesn't modify the action.

Man, if my gun looked like that I think I'd beadblast my ammo too! :P

My guns can't look anything like that- my guns only look used  , however, I took out the crossbolt, ground and filed the end off 'til it fit flush and them replaced it, tightening the set screw down firmly against it. My GG is mainly a personal defense weapon in bear country so it usually kept around loaded with chamber empty, really not a big safety issue except for the kids. With them, I am the "bolt" and I do get "cross" when I see things that don't align themselves with proper gun respect.

Do what you want but I cant see it weakining the action. The breech block is a good 1/2" forward of the hole in question & since your replacing it with a steel plug anyhow I think it would be safe. JMO of course but mine aint in & mine aint broke.

The easiest fix is to take the stock off, clean the goop out of the set screw on the left side rear of the reciever, put the safety in the fire possition, and tighten down the screw until the safety won't move, put the stock back on....Jake
