    Booby Traps

This oak tree is out back in the woods. I cut about 8-10 cords of firewood a year so that this one needs cutting up. Thought I would show it for those that do occasional cutting to make shooting lanes and that sort of thing on their hunting property. The oak is large enough at the base such that the chain saw will not reach through it. The hanger is pretty fair sized. I think I will take down the tree as it is dead on one side and not healthy. The hanger broke off a larger oak standing next to it. Trying to decide whether that will go or not. The base should be sawed for lumber from the larger one, but probably will just get burned. Biggest problem is that these large trees require a lot of splitting to make firewood.

There are about 3-4 hangers in this one that could get a person. The thing is growing on a hill such that getting the tractor in to pull out the hanger might also be tricky. Done this sort of thing a bit so will have to take my time. It is wedged in pretty solid.

Can you work your way down from the top of the hanger cutting it up and then pull what's left loose with your tractor?

That's the plan. I also have used the winch on the 4 wheeler for some of the work like this. The big hanger in the crotch is touching the ground and is easy to get at from one side. The hill scares me more than the tree as it is very steep.

Debating on these trees. If left they can become habitat for critters such as raccoons and squirrels, sometimes. Really a shame as the trees have been around longer than my house. I spoke to the family of the original homesteaders. The place at one time was a sheep farm. I have found woven wire in the middle of the woods and indications of wooded pasture areas. Don't cut healthy oaks, the acorns are a food plot. Logger claimed when he came in early he saw about 12 deer in my oaks in the back part of the place. I have been thinning out some of the red oak, but their acorns are not as valued as that from the what we call the white oak.

Have you considered using a .30 cal "chain saw"?
