    Winchester 350 Legend

So winchester released a new cartridge, the 350 legend. From what I understand, it's more or less a 30-30 that did a lot of amphetamines. Seeing some pictures of the rounds Winchester plans on sending to market, it appears they're offering flat nose and FMJ, meaning the lever gun could see a viable rifle round that truly can keep up with the modern day bolt actions and semi autos.

Am I pipe dreaming or could this be reality?

I haven't looked at that round yet... But, I do have a Marlin 308MX that easily keeps up with the bolt guns at my local 300 yard range...

I see the ballistics are marginally better than the 30-30. But are half the 308 Win and the 308MX... I don't see that round as a bolt gun impressor...

Knowing nothing other than the info in your post, it looks like it will be a .358 / 35 caliber, something along the lines of a 35 Rem.

Then, I took a couple minutes and searched it up. It's a straight wall case currently available in only the Winchester XPR bolt action. Recoil is supposed to be less than a 30-30, with more energy at 200 yds, but no mention of which bullet, however the available bullet weights show to range from 145g to 265g. Looks promising. More reading to do.

You realize you just dangled a new potential levergun cartridge in front of a bunch of levergun addicts??

Are they giving any MV figures with the various grain weights?

    Another link to some info.

    https://woodburyoutfitters.com/the-t...led-cartridge/

The thing mentioned most is that it's legal in 47/50 states for deer hunting.

My first question is, "off of what point does it headspace"? It's rimless and has no shoulder, which might indicate it headspaces off the edge of the case mouth. If so, that would mean brass length is critical.

    Still very interesting...

I missed it. If it's better than a 375w I will have one. Only if ballistics are better and it takes standard dia. bullets. I have a feeling it will be .357dia.

None I have found, but still looking. The bullet diameter is .357, not .358 like the .35 Rem. The brass is a blown out .223. So it will be small primer and small overall. Pictures of the flat nose bullet cartridges look like a baby 45-70.

It's very close to my 357AR https://www.marlinowners.com/forum/w...444x1-8-a.html The hunting load we use is a 180gr at around 2150fps out of a 16" barrel or about 2220 fps out of a 20" barrel according to a magnetospeed. Works great on deer, recoil is light and the report is more like a 12ga with shot v/s a 223. The farthest deer we've taken so far has been 142yds which broke the opposite shoulder on the way out. It'll be a great choice for areas limited to straight walled cartridges an especially for kids because of the lighter recoil than something like a 450BM or Raptor.

For a lever action I'd still go 357Max. 180gr Speer HCFN 2130fps at 48Kpsi out of a 20" barrel which is within what a 336 can do. I've test fired my 336-357Max with the mag tube duct taped on and it works. Hoped to have it done in time for late doe season but it didn't happen. https://www.marlinowners.com/forum/w...maximum-6.html

I take it this is for hunting deer in straight wall case areas like Ohio or southern Michigan?- Locoman
