Happy Thanksgiving to all who visit here! I know that every day I am thankful for the friendship and laughs that this thread and all who have (or will) visit(ed) here have given to me and mine -- and I think to a lot of other folks as well! I care folks, so thanks for the over 87000 visitors at this most eclectic of threads on MO! John
and Happy Thanksgiving to you too John. I am thankful for all my MO friends here. Even those of you who have sunshine and NO snow!!
Happy Thanksgiving John. I love this thread and check in frequently. I like to see what's new in your corner of the world, thanks for sharing.
Crazy weather continues in Texas! YeeHaw!! Don't tell me John that we have no snow -- I have proof! Not a lot, but hey, it's Texas:biggrin:
Attachment 126686 Sorry the picture is turned sideways, but you get the idea!
And we really do get some fall color in Texas as well. First a pic of the lane coming from the front gate toward the cabin, then one of the big oak at the corner of the orchard, and finally one looking northeast from the well house. We're lucky to have some pretty oaks as the oak wilt disease killed a LOT of oaks in this part of Texas.

OK, now for a little fun! A couple of weeks ago, we had a temporary lift of the burn ban so we burned a small pile of brush. The donkeys, Juice and Jelly always want to see what's going on. My wife took this picture of the two of them checking out the fire and I think it would make a good picture cartoon if the right caption were added, so have at it -- remember it's a family forum, so keep it (acceptably) clean. You know the rules as well as I
Weekend before last, we got about 2 1/4 inches of rain, so we're in good shape for awhile. I hope y'all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and while it's a bit early, I wish you and yours a MERRY CHRISTMAS! We care, John
I can't believe you call that snow!!! That is a light summer frost! LOL Nice pics and commentary as usual. I like hearing it. I am on my way to mesa, az for the winter as my asthma has got the best of me this year.
We get just a little bit more snow than you John. Normal winter, top of the spigit is 48" NO BRAG, just fact. lol:shot:
As most of you know, I have real difficulty throwing away any "scrap" of lumber more than 18" long. So after we built the MotorPool I had several 18" - 24" pieces of 1X4 stacked in the workshop, so I decided since the weather was half decent that I should hone my woodworking skills a bit. Out come the tools and away we go -- my wife found a picture on the internet of a "LOVE" sign built from some 2X4 lumber that I decided to duplicate. Worked out pretty well I think
Attachment 127262 But there was a problem in that it was supposed to stand up. I figured I needed some more weight on the lower right side of the sign so I broke out the drill press and put some holes in the upper and lower arms of the E.
Attachment 127263 It so happened that the holes were just .01 inch larger than the 45-70 Oregon Trail bullets so that was my weightAttachment 127264
And lo and behold, it now stood up just fineAttachment 127265 Looks like I need to make some adjustments as lead bullets and LOVE do seem a bit of a strange combination:biggrin: Before you ask, I used the drill press because I didn't feel comfortable enough with the 45-70 (yet) to hit the end of a 1X4 and I thought overpenetration might be a problem with the 405 grainers:flute: Talk later, John
LOL Ahhhhhhhhhh....... come on John you know you can put a 47-70 bullet dead center in a 1x4 on edge. But I understand on the penetration issue though! lol
I think you have missed the point of Marlinowners though.. A 45-70 is love!! I think that your Love project would be a great ammo shelf if hung on the wall. The middle horizontal on the E would be a good place to put a small sign that said 22 ammo wanted!!
The meeting point of the V would be a good spot to put a takedown cleaning rod and kit.
Great idea for a ammo shelf.......Once again you have out done yourself again!!!!
From warm and sunny AZ.
Thought I'd put a silly Merry Christmas wish in here with a group called "Straight No Chaser". Here is some serious a cappela harmony. John
Well, it took me a few days but I've finally gone through the entirety of this thread. I must say I love your work and I dream of a getaway home like your cabin someday somewhere West of here. This was truly an inspirational story to read and I have definitely saved a few of your ideas. I really like your knack for re-purposing scrap wood and cedar limbs! And your wife has a good sense of humor with your Beach front and all haha! I hope you keep updating with your progress and changes! I'll be re-visiting the older pages for some time I'm sure during the projects within my own home. You also have a fine collection of Marlins and handguns! I have a few long guns but I have but 1 Marlin 336 in .35rem, I've only taken it to the range once, but boy was I in love! One day I will attempt my hand at re-loading. Anyway, just thought I would post to let you know someone has been reading up on your story, It's really cool to see the progress of your Cabin from day 1 to now!
Take it easy,
