    Today in Rock n Roll History

    1940 --- Dash Crofts is born in Cisco, Texas.

    1941 --- David Crosby is born in Los Angeles, California.

    1945 --- Steve Martin is born in Waco, Texas.

    1956 --- DJ Bob Rickman, in Washington, DC, starts the Society for The Prevention of Cruelty to Elvis. Rickman was disturbed by all the negative feedback to Elvis' music. Newspapers have been calling Elvis a 'Hillbilly' and a 'threat to society'.

    1957 --- NBC pulls the plug on the Nat King Cole variety music show. The network was having trouble finding advertising sponsors.

    1958 --- Gladys Presley dies in Memphis, Tennessee. She was only 42. Elvis never really gets over his mother's death.

    1961 --- The Beatles play a lunch show at the Cavern Club in Liverpool.

    1962 --- Brian Epstein, Beatles manager, sees Ringo Starr playing in Skegness, England, and approaches him after the show. Epstein is looking to replace Pete Best on drums, feeling that Best draws little audience interest.

    1963 --- The Beatles appear on BBC-TV's 'Scene At 6:30'.

    1964 --- Johnny Burnette dies in Clear Lake, California. He was only 30.

    1965 --- The Beatles make their last appearance on NBC-TV's 'Ed Sullivan Show'.

    'Hang On Sloopy' by The McCoys is released.

    'I Got You Babe' by Sonny and Cher reaches #1 on the USA singles chart.

    'Help' by The Beatles enters its second week at #1 on the UK singles chart.

    1966 --- The Beatles play the Cleveland Stadium in Ohio.

    KLUE Radio in Longview, Texas is struck by lightning.

    Little Anthony and The Imperials, The Shadows, and The Castiles appear at the Surf 'n See Club in Sea Bright, New Jersey.

    1970 --- Steven Stills is arrested in La Jolla, California in possession of contraband.

    1971 --- Diana Ross welcomes daughter Rhonda Ross into the World. Berry Gordy claims paternity, later proved true by DNA testing, although Ross was married to Robert Silberstein at the time of birth.

    'Maggie May' single by Rod Stewart is released in the USA.

    'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' by The BeeGees reaches #1 on the USA singles chart.

    'Get It On' by T-Rex enters its last week at #1 on the UK singles chart.

    1974 --- 'You're Having My Baby' by Paul Anka and Odia Coates earns its Gold Record. Feminists boycott the record, stating that the title should be 'Our Baby'.

    1976 --- 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' by Elton John and Kiki Dee enters its second week at #1 on the USA singles chart, and its fourth week at #1 in the UK.

    1981 --- Judge Joseph Evans in Memphis, Tennessee relieves the Estate of Elvis Presley from any further payments to Col Tom Parker. Parker had been in control of Elvis' finances for thirty-six years.

    1982 --- 'Eye Of The Tiger' by Survivor enters its second week at #1 on the USA singles chart.

    'Come On Eileen' by Dexy's Midnight Runners enters its second week at #1 on the UK singles chart.

    1985 --- Michael Jackson outbids Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono and takes possession and the rights to the Lennon-McCartney song catalog containing over 250 Beatles songs.

    1988 --- Roy Buchanan dies in Fairfax, Virginia. He was 48.

    1991 --- Tony and Francine Orlando welcome daughter Jenny Rose into the World.

    1992 --- Wayne Newton files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection in Las Vegas, Nevada.

    Tony Williams dies in NYC. He was only 64.

    'MTV Party To Go' album earns its Gold Record. All the proceeds from sales go to the AMC Cancer Research Center in Denver, Colorado.

    1995 --- Members of The Grateful Dead meet and decide to keep touring without Jerry Garcia.

    1998 --- PBS airs a Documentary highlighting Robbie Robertson's Native American heritage.

    1999 --- Red Hot Chili Peppers play Red Square in Moscow, a free concert along with local Russian Rock bands.

    2003 --- A major power blackout hits the Northeast US. Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, and KISS cancel concert dates.

    2016 --- Ringo Starr becomes a Great Grandfather, the first Beatle to do so.

    2017 --- Ted Nugent tells the Press he is being kept out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because of his involvement with the NRA.
