    Today in Rock n Roll History

    1877 --- Thomas A Edison, working in his laboratory at Menlo Park,New Jersey , makes the first successful recording and playback. He recited "Mary had a little lamb" into the crude microphone and it transcribed onto a wax cylinder. The machine played it back, and the rest is history.

    1927 --- Porter Wagoner is born in West Plains, Missouri.

    1929 --- Buck Owens is born in Sherman, Texas.

    1949 --- Mark Knopfler is born in Glasgow, Scotland.

    1956 --- The Platters appear on NBC-TV's 'Ed Sullivan Show'.

    1957 --- Frankie Lymon leaves the Teenagers to pursue a solo career.

    1960 --- Pete Best replaces Tommy Moore as drummer for the Silver Beetles.

    1961 --- 'Tossin' and Turnin' by Bobby Lewis enters its last week at #1 on the USA singles chart.

    1964 --- The Beatles appear on BBC Radio show 'Teen Scene'.

    1966 --- The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane play the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco.

    The Beatles play the Chicago International Amphitheater, kicking off what will be their last tour of America.

    1967 --- 'Ode To Billy Joe' single by Bobbie Gentry breaks into the USA Top 40.

    'All You Need Is Love' by The Beatles reaches #1 on the USA singles chart.

    'San Francisco' by Scott McKenzie reaches #1 on the UK singles chart.

    Fleetwood Mac makes their first public appearance, playing the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival in England.

    Diana Ross and The Supremes appear on ABC-TV's 'American Bandstand'.

    1969 --- Blind Faith kicks off their North American tour, playing Madison Square Garden in NYC.

    1970 --- Janis Joplin and the Full Tilt Boogie Band play Harvard Stadium in Boston, Massachusetts. It is her last public performance.

    1972 --- Jim Croce appears on ABC-TV's 'American Bandstand'.

    'Alone Again' by Gilbert O'Sullivan reaches #1 on the USA singles chart.

    'School's Out' by Alice Cooper reaches #1 on the UK singles chart.

    1978 --- 'Three Times A Lady' by The Commodores reaches #1 on the USA singles chart.

    1984 --- Lionel Richie closes the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California, singing 'All Night Long'.

    1988 --- John Denver and Cassandra Delaney are married.

    1989 --- The Rolling Stones play an unannounced gig at a small club, Toad's Place, in New Haven Connecticut, getting ready to kick off a North American tour.

    1992 --- The Grateful Dead cancel five shows in Washington and Oregon to give Jerry Garcia time to heal up from touring exhaustion.

    1994 --- Woodstock '94 kicks off in Saugerties, New York. Three more days of Peace and Music.

    1995 --- A mass Wake for Jerry Garcia is held in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

    1997 --- Luther Allison dies in Madison, Wisconsin. He was only 57.

    1999 --- Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band finish a fifteen night engagement at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

    The State of Missouri declares today as 'Porter Wagoner Day'.

    2003 --- eBay auctioneer Anthony DeFontes tells the Press he will sell Elvis Presley's tooth separately from the lock of hair and a Gold Record, items he obtained from The King's former girlfriend.

    2008 --- Mark David Chapman is denied parole for the fifth time in New York State ''due to concern for Public safety and welfare".

    2015 --- The US Postal Service announces that the Elvis Presley forever stamp is now available for sale.

    Billy and Alexis Joel welcome daughter Della Rose into the World.
