Marlin 45 long colt vs Rossi 45 long colt

Anyone compare the Marlin 45 long colt carbine or rifle and the Rossi 45 long cold stainless carbine or rifle.
I am interested in one or the other. Don't know if they are round barrel or octagon.
Would like one or the other to compliment my Ruger Blackhawk 45

The one made in the USA matches the Ruger.

The Rossi would be stronger being a Win clone.

The Marlin in a CBC would be my first choice.

Re: Marlin 45 long colt vs Rossi 45 long colt

I have both a 24" Rossi and a Marlin CB, my father has a 20 in Rossi round barrel. The Marlin handles like the 20" Rossi. The 24" Rossi is much heavier. All three are nice rifles, the Rossi can be made a little smother. The Marlin handles nicer and can easily be scoped. In my opinion the Marlin is a nicer rifle. The Rossi is very good for the cost. If I had to only keep one I would keep the Marlin. If money was a concern I would and did buy the Rossi. Thankfully I can keep both.

Re: Marlin 45 long colt vs Rossi 45 long colt

I too have both and have used both in Cowboy action shooting. The marlin is a much smoother action than the Rossi. My Rossi is a 20 inch carbine, one of the older ones without a safety switch on the bolt and both are chambered in .45 Colt. The big colt rounds are just about all the Rossi can handle. The Marlin action handles them well, ejecting them in a nice neat pile on the ground beside me,(if I hold the rifle still as I shoot of course). The Rossi ejects them straight up and on top of my Stetson and they roll around the brim and fall off the back. I'v had it put them down the back of my shirt when not wearing a hat! Even with the longer 26 inch octagon barrel the Marlin handles just as good as the Rossi. I would buy the Marlin, knowing what I know now but I sure as shootin' am not going to get rid of either. As a carrying gun the Rossi is lighter and carries very comfortably. My Rossi is a Stainless one also so needs little upkeep which is a consideration. Marlin does offer Stainless 1894 and 1895 lever actions but my Marlin is a Blued "Cowboy" model. I also have a Marlin Cowboy in 45-70 as well as a replica 1873 Winchester in .45, a replica 1866 Winchester in 44-40, and an original 1892 Winchester saddle ring carbine in 38-40, and a Winchester model 94 in 30-30 so have some other guns to compare. I like the Marlin!
    Hope I helped.

Get the Marlin. The Marlin Cowboy rifles are some of the finest to come out in many a year.

I played with a Rossi carbine in 44-40 for a couple of weeks. Didn't hold a candle to my 1894.

    44-40 Willy

I am liking my 1894 CB 44-40 more and more. Can't wait for deer season to try it out on an old(young) Ky buck. The 1894 CB rifles are the best handling of all the CB rifles. Like the book says" this rifle pure old west". I like my 44 mag and 45 Colt 1894's just fine too but the 44-40 will hunt this year. The 38-55 has done the hunting the last 2 or 3 years so it is only fair.

It is somewhat a matter of preference. I have the 24" Marlin and my wife has a 20" EMF Brass SS from Steve Young. I prefer the Marlin, but she doesn't like the added weight and prefers her short rifle. If you are going to get a Rossi, I would strongly suggest getting it from Steve Young. He is the 1892 specialist.

George, it's said that the 30-30 had been out for quite a few years before it caught up to the 44-40 in deer killed. Some of us are trying to get the 44-40 back in the lead.

That Rossi I was messing with in 44-40 had an oversized barrel that used a groove diameter for the 44 Mag. Marlin is the only modern manufacturer of 44-40s that I know of that used the correct groove diameter for a 44-40. Everyone else uses a 44 Mag barrel chambered in 44-40.

Re: Marlin 45 long colt vs Rossi 45 long colt

I will admit I am new to the Rossi world having just started considering one a few weeks ago for the first time. I just purchased one of the older versions in 44-40 (pre-safety) so I cannot comment on how good it is going to be yet. I can say this after doing some research and inspecting the gun once I got it, here is my conclusions. This is a very strong action they chamber the rossi for the 454casul which has a CUP psi above 50,000. They are not a show gun, but I think for nomal everyday use the fit and finish is fine. I would even say close to the Marlins. It is a very tight action and will require some action work to smooth up, but so did my Marlin, though not quite as tight from the factory. If money and availability were no object I would get the Marlin. I think everything is there in the rossi to make it into a good gun with a little effort once you get it. Price was a consideration for me and the fact it is harder to find a 1894 in 44-40. They are out there but you gotta look. The 45lc are lots easier to find. I second the advice to visit with Stevesgunz.com he seems to be the official Rossi 92 Doctor and has anything you want for them. He has a DVD and action parts kit for the Rossi 92 and he also does rossi 92 gunsmithing. I am waiting for my video to arrive and plan to post a thread on my 92 project as soon as I get it done.
