Put down my bird dog today

He was losing weight badly, from 63 pounds in December (a little light for him) down to 49 pounds today. No strength. Cancer was killing him. Did the right thing and took him to the vet today. He's gone now. Damn. Best danged dog I ever had. Well mannered. Strong. Great hunter! I'm missing ol' Clark already. Knew this day was coming, but it still hurts. He's a German Wirehaired Pointer, and a good one.

Clark lived part of his life as a show dog, did real well. Two years ago he went back to the GWP nationals as a "senior" dog and won.

Early in life he'd been trained to hunt, but never did any hunting after that initial training until he came to live with us. The first time he got on game birds when I had a shotgun in hand, he looked back at me, kinda startled as if asking "Oh, is that what we're doing? Cool! I know how to do this!" Oh my goodness could that dog hunt! He loved it. So did I. He reawakened my semi-dormant interest in upland bird hunting and we spent many days chasing pheasant & chukar here in Washington.

I'd like to think that we gave him a good home. He was super protective of Mama Miner and the house, as well as my adult sons. They were his to guard. I've had a number of dogs over the years, but Clark was special. So much a part of the family. Doggone it. Too bad they don't last longer.

My youngest son was particularly fond of Clark and was with us at the end.

M700.....He was a very hansom dog...so sorry for your loss. I've been there myself...its definitely like loosing a member of the family.

Remember the good times...forget the bad ones. (yes...you had bad ones I'm sure.) Hang in there...you'll make it through.

BTW...I love the last pic of him pointing. Very focused.

Beautiful dog. I've seen so many go, I swear a little bit of me goes with every one. I know how you feel and I'm so sorry. But I believe we will meet our treasured friends again.

Sad. I know how you must feel. Had to put down my APBT Skully a good while back. . It was heartbreaking.

But don't worry, another furry bundle of joy will find their way to you soon.
