No experience with hunting a 45 carbine. Main observation I can add is so far all 45s I have owned do very well will original 250gr RnFt
cast bullet at factory dupe. The bullet is a dependable deer killer. The velocity can be cranked to gain on ballistics with lighter Jacketed bullets. I not had much luck with anything lighter than 200gr in cranked loads. The lighter bullets can be very accurate at LV target loads. I can't think of a bullet 200gr or bigger that isn't capable of taking deer.

My 10 year old grandson got his first deer tonight with a T/C Contender Carbine with 16" .45 Colt barrel and a Hornady 300 gr XTP.

He came running up to me as I was walking back to check on his progress with his dad. The first thing he said to me was, "I smoked him Grandpa!!"

Found a mint 1894CB chambered in .45 that I thought I might try to pursue if it would make a good deer gun inside of 100yds.

    gunner76,

I agree with others, a lighter modern design bullet at higher fps is the best option.

My experiences, over may tests, is that the case of the 45 Colt and standard chamber size are the items to overcome for better performance.

Originally, the 45 Colt was loaded with an explosive, not propellant, Black Powder. That powder expanded the case to the chamber and all reloading did not involve resizing the brass. The bullet sits on the top of the powder and you crimp to make sure the bullets does not fall out. The case after the first firing fit the chamber correctly.

I have tried 260 and 280 gr bullets at higher velocities and found they do not perform as well as bullets in the 200 gr range moving much faster.

One tip I can offer is in your reloading process. Rather than full length resize your case, if you have a carbide die, only resize the heck of the case enough to hold the bullet. Let the rest of the case remain at the chamber size. You can use slower burning powders that will give you the higher velocity and still seal the chamber. The case will look more like a 44-40. The SAAMI chamber specifications are over sized relative to the cartridge dimensions. The partial resized case will function and feed well.

You have a capable cartridge. You only need to make the parts fit together and work to your intended goal.
