    Spring Bear

The Big Game thread has been pretty slow. Is anyone bear hunting this spring? memtb

Yeppers. Me & my Guide Gun are heading back to New Brunswick CA on 06/01. Can.t wait. I have spent the last week getting the gun all sighted in & making ammo. Going with a 350gr. Hornady RN running in the 1700's fps. I usually use a Bear tooth Pile Driver lite @ 425gr. I just wanted to switch it up this year. Hopefully I have some pics when I get back.

Good for you. Good Luck and have a great time. We’ve wanted to do several “day trips”, but life keeps interfering! memtb

memtb, spring bear is a draw-only hunt here in Washington. So, no, not doing any bear hunting now.

Our general bear season opens Aug 1st though, which really isn't that far away. My son and I are both looking forward to it. My son has shot two nice size black bear with his 30-06, and will likely continue to use that rifle, with handloaded 165 grain Nosler Partitions.

I might use my 30-06 again, possibly with handloaded 168 gr Nosler E-Tips. I haven't used them on game yet.

Or, I have taken a couple of bear with my Ruger Number One single shot, 375 H&H. That works real well. I use a 260 gr Nosler Accubond at about 2650 fps for excellent accuracy and great on-game performance.

But, no, no spring bear hunting for Guy this year.

Hey Guy - when August rolls around, are you going to use a predator call again? The last time you did that, what were you using - dying rabbit?

I used a mouth-blown doe/fawn bleat, and worked it just like a dying rabbit call. Intense, painful shrieking, followed by whimpering. The bear came in surprisingly fast and very much looking for something to kill.

Yes, I will probably do that again, though I'll try just good old "spot and stalk" first. That has worked out really well in the past.

    Regards, Guy

I wish, and we need a spring season here, but to no avail. We are covered up with them. Here's a picture on one of the cameras this week. A little fellow but he and others show up all times of the day and night.

I find it rather peculiar that two states (N Carolina, and Washington) that have tremendous black bear populations would have such restrictive regulations. We have a weak, but stable population with lengthily spring/fall seasons, dictated by a female quota limit! memtb

Where in NB? We have hunted around Bathurst before. Lot's of bear. We used PR Guides, great experience all the way around. Good luck with your hunt!!
