    Piebald buck in Ohio

My cousin toppled this most unusual buck in Van Wert County near the Indiana state line. He was hunting with slugs fired from a Winchester 12 gauge smooth bore shotgun. Distance was about 50 yards.

I have NEVER seen such a buck in the wild.

While piebalds aren't what I would call common in these parts, I have seen them on numerous occasions through the years and have taken two. In certain areas of the county there seem to be concentrations of them. I suppose some ancestor buck and/or doe in those areas created a population that has been sustained through the years. Some hunters I know won't shoot them because of their "rarity", yet truly big bucks are if anything even rarer here and they sure don't hesitate to shoot those!

The myth is that it brings bad luck to shoot a piebald deer. But I don't believe in myths or legends.

it's "bad luck" for the piebald deer if he is in front of my gun, or your cousins! I do not believe in "luck" good or bad so that buck would be in trouble,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    Maybe it's a goat.

I've heard of them of course and seen pictures but never saw one. Bet it tastes just as good as any other buck.

I've had this doe with the white spot on my place for about 5 years now.
I don't know if this is what they call a true pie-bald or if she was hit by a car
and healed up...I really don't think the latter is the case, since she is in
good health and has at least two fawns a year.
But either way, I always look foreward to seeing her again.

That buck it the pic- I would surely have kept and tanned the hide.
