to trade or not to trade......????

hey guys, i had recently posted a debate on calibre and the 45-70 won. now my dilema is whether or not i trade in my thompson center venture in 30-06 and get a 1895gbl. im not going to be shooting out past 200yrds and i already have a lee enfield .303 british which is basically like my 30-06 ballisticly, and most of my moose/deer hunting is done in the bush and small swamps. any thoughts or suggestions? trade in or keep it stored in the safe?

Here is my rule (after many hard learned lessons): If I am thinking about selling a gun for another, I make myself take it to the range at least one more time before selling it. If I can shoot it for an afternoon, and still feel no sentimental attachment to it, sell it. If you start getting all misty-eyed and verklempt...start saving.
I don't believe in fairy tales, sermons, or stories about money....but thank you kindly for the cigarette.

Well, over the years I have traded off or sold a bunch of firearms, most of which I shouldn't have! ------ Now, those which went to my son, fine. But a bunch of others were bad moves. Think hard! ---------- If it was me, the .303 would be on the block if something had to go! ----------- However, within 200yds. using a good cast bullet of over 400gr (bigger is better) and with a Wide Flat Nose (WFN) at a velocity of 1500 - 1700fps the 45/70 is a great way to go! ------------ Crusty Deary Ol'Coot

Be hard for me to let go of the 30-06 for the sake of versatility and ammo availability, compared to the 303, but I do understand the siren call of the Marlin. Everyone here, does.

It doesnt matter how you get your first Marlin 1895 just as long as you get it.

my grandpa gave me the .303 and its in incredible shape so its not going anywhere. my biggest issue with my 30-06 is that its scoped and a pain in the arse to haul around the thick bush. i love my jc higgins 30-30 for that. also the other issue was a recall 2 years ago on the sear failing and couldve gone off at any time....even though they "fixed it" im still nervous to chamber a round until the last second..just in case.

You have a .303 and a .30-30... You don't like the scoped .30-06 so much as per the scope issue, plus you mention a lack of confidence with the mechanicals of that rifle. Do like njcioffi mentions and take it out one last time - - then trade it off on the Marlin you are eye-ballin'... Then rest easy - - no scoped rifle that is a PITA, no worries about potential mechanical failures leading to an AD, and a certain comfort in the .45-70 capable of doing anything that you can put a clean shot into out to 200 yards. Life is good.

Definitely dump that 30-06. If you can't trust a gun why have it.
