    Speer 300gr load data inquiry

    Hey guys
can't seem to make a 300 gr cast BTB fly right out of my 444P so I'd like to give the speers a chance to redeem the rifle. I'm really careful about how I re-load , have been doing so for about 40 yrs so I don't think it's a reloading problem ie seating depth, powder ect---maybe a barrel problem, I hope it's not. My 45-70 loads are scary accurate and i'd like to use the 444 as a backup elk rifle. I
really would appreciate the experience you guys have had with the speer 300 unicor ( powder, load data-- chrony velocity if possible ) been using H322 but maybe I have to change that. I've been trying to get some advice from Marshall at BTB-- his phone just rings--must be on vacation
    Thanks

I've been using Speer 300 grain Uni-cor for a long time and it's my favorite bullet in the 444. My best load is 45.0 gr. Re-7 in Remington cases, CCI 200 primers, and the Lee FCD. Chronographs 2016 fps in my 22 inch barreled Marlin. It's been very accurate in all of my 444's!!!

    Whats the bullet diameter?

Their are only two kinds of people, those who own a 444 and those who wish they owned one, and yes folks, denial is bliss!

Not much has really changed in the world in 2000 years, Christians are still being thrown to the Lions! and Satan's tool of Deception is still working like a charm, from the time of Adam and Eve, to today!

    Hello heaveybullets
More information would be helpfull, ei.. your load data. Is this a NEW rifle to you? Are all the fasteners tight? What do you mean by fly right? Are you getting unusually large groups or perhaps keyholeing of the bullet? Is the bore clean? Is your rifle scoped? Are the sights good and tight? Does any other round give you good accuracy in this rifle? Sorry for all the questions just trying to get a feel of what you have looked at to correct the issue.

load-53gr h322 ,cci 200's, new rem brass, lee factory crimp, coal 2.552" used rifle but in excellent shape, headspace within limits, scope leupold vx111 1.5x5 ( took this scope off another of my rifles-problem not the scope, rings or base) rifling and crown look ok, headspace checks out, shoots 1.5" at 25 yrds and 5-8" at 100 high, low, left and right , no keyholes, just nice 44cal holes. the only thing I can think of is wild pressure swings between rounds but I weigh every round to 1/10 grain so barring magic thought I'd try a jacketed bullet and see what happens. I've always been able to make a bullet shoot right but maybe not this one. If there's something I missed let me know thanks ( I don't see any leading either)

Thanks guys-- got a pound of re-7 on hold in town -will pick it up later today or tomorrow, and shoot at my range on saturday, think i'll try Re-7 with my present bullet and load some speers also to see what happens. My wife says it's an ignition problem( she's been listening to me ramble on for 30 yrs) she says the way the primer is stuck is causing the pressure swings!--- it is a hot load, the primer holes are not quite cratered but they're thinking about it, could be!!! just what we need, another woman that thinks, it's gettin dangerous out there, who knows what they're capable of!!!!
I'll report when the test is done

Littlejohn in my Avatar is my brother John and he was big in size and in life. But the country folks where he had his hunting place all loved him and called tiny. So it make me wonder about your users name.

I'm interested in seeing if you solve this problem. I have leaned that powder does make a difference because after zeroing my 338 with AA2520 powder, I tried Win. 760 powder that I decided to test. At 100 yds. with AA2520 I shot "X" ring shots switch over the Win. 760 and was shooting over the target a good 18". I than shot the rounds with the AA2520 powder and back in the "X" ring.

    I have a 444S it has a 1 in 38" twist and I don't think I'm telling you something new, but some 444 with 1 in 38" twist barrel won't shoot the 300 gr. + bullets well.

My Avatar is my brother John who left me to soon. He was 10 Y/O 1 month older than me. He took me off the Streets of Brooklyn taught me how to handle a rifle and to hunt. For his attention I would always be grateful. Rest in Peace Brother John.

    Range update--46 grns ,Re-7 300 grn speer,cci 200, new resized rem brass 25 yrds 2 sets of 3 hole cloverleaf, chrony 2021,SD 12, 18.5 ported bbl
100 yrds 3 shot spread 1.5"(even with 5 pwr I can't focus well, I'm sure the load will shoot better than I can)
53 grns, Re-7, cast 290 BTB same as above components 1 set 3 shots 1" string at 25 yrds (same direction, no indication of pressure
change but my rule is 3 holes must be touching at 25 for me to hunt with it so the BTB doesn't make this cut .chrony avg was
2325,sd 25(this load is probably too hot to be judged fairly so I'll bring the load down to 50 grns and repeat the test later this fall)
Re-7 definitly makes things much more uniform in a 444, yet 55 grns h322 400 grn speer in my 45-70 flies like a laser chrony
2057 Thanks to all for your input, good hunting--- Littlejohn
