Nope,... never heard, or, read of it before, until now.

The 44-40 cartridge, with a less diameter bullet, a much thinner neck,
and a finished cartridge overall length being almost an inch shorter than the 444,
I won't be testing this concept in my 444 any time soon.

Just no. Only shoot cartridges your barrel/owners manual tells you to shoot.

IMHO I wouldn't attempt to shoot a .44-40 or even a .44 Special, or .44 Mag round out of a .444 Marlin. I think that the expansion of the pistol cases would be excessive, and you will have a detonation on and in your hands.
I wouldn't attempt to do it.

WOW! I suppose if I were down to a .444 rifle and only had .44-40 ammo and I needed to defend myself or someone else, I'd go what what I had, again, only in extremis. Both the .444 and the .44-40 are excellent cartridges in their own right and are ideally suited to taking game at short to moderate distances and do the job quite well. My concern is somebody would shoot a .44-40 in a .444 and there would be a catastrophe. Or, am I missing something?

No. It wouldn't work. 44-40 is a bottle neck round. Even if the case would fit in, it would headspace on the rim and be way short of the .444 length.

Upon ignition, the neck would release the bullet, but there wouldn't be anything to seal the bore. Pressurized gas would discharge around the bullet, before it got into the bore and sealed it. It would be like shooting a squib. Likely the bullet would stick in the barrel. Same thing happens if you shoot a .380 acp in a 9mm.

You can shoot 44 special in a 44 mag because the bullet is long enough to engage the rifling and seal the bore before the bullet completely leaves the case. Same for 38 spec/ .357 magnum.

However, the .44-40 OAL is 1.592" the OAL of the 444 Marlin is 2.550". Unless your bullet is longer than 1" it will not seal the bore before leaving the case.

    Won't work. Don't do it.

Don't shoot 44 mags in your .444 either.
