Latest addition to the Marlin family: 444P

Picked this one up a couple weeks ago in a trade. It had a new 3x9 Leupold scope on it which I will be mounting on my 917V project. I prefer pistol grip stocks on the "short" guns so did a conversion on that. The rear sight was missing so I wasn't sure if I wanted to go stock or something else. I have XS, RPP and Skinners on other rifles, ended up going with the Skinner guide gun set on this one. Most likely will also be putting an RPP medium lever on it too. Only thing that sucks right now is I'm having shoulder issues and won't be able to get the front sight filed down (if needed). Shooting big bores is not in my near future with the way I'm feeling. Pictured with my 444S that RPP did a full length mag tube on.

You just built that P just as I would have. I prefer the pistol grip stocks also. If the shoulder doesn't agree with the 444's recoil, let me know, I'll save a spot in my safe for it!

Good job and looks good! I feel your pain literally and figuratively on the shooting part.

if you handload for it, you can make it "wimp" load. my load is a 300gr fn gc(saeco) with 24.0gr of 2400/tuft of dacron(1624fps). its like shooting a 30-30.

    300-310gr boolit
    2400
    22.0-25.5gr
    1.3gr+/ of dacron

    275gr ranch dog with 41.0gr of rel7

    280gr lfn gc with 41.5gr of rel7

250gr mihek hp with 11.5gr of unique

Hi, I'm new to the forum and have a question. I have an Outftter also and is just my second Marlin. I've been attempting to convert mine to a pistol grip configuration but can't get the lever to work. Both the used one that was supposedly from an 1895 and the new lever I bought from Midway are made differently from the stock lever. On mine, the end that inserts into the bolt is full thickness back to the pivot/lever screw. On the other levers there is an area milled out where the round part of the arm is with just a little pad left full thickness on the end of the lever. When you cycle the action the lever catches when its fully open and you cant close the action. I don't know what to do.

Edit: I may have figured it out :-)

Hey man I just tired 22.5 grs. 2400 and my 320 cast.
That was a hoot, and definitely slings the snot out of my 8" Gong at 50 yds.
And like you said low recoil.

i shot a buck at 53 yards and 2 doe(25 - 30 yards) this past year. the buck travelled about 30 yards and the doe were dead right there or close to it. i could shot her all day using 2400.

did you use dacron? i like dacron because using it make my boolits more accurate.

    No dacron, don't have any.
Not even sure where I might find it.
Just loaded 5, walked out on the deck and hammered that gong.
