    Found a 444P Outfitter Today

I'm primarily a Savage collector, but today when I walked through the local Cabelas, this one spoke to me. I wasn't sure at first, drove home, did a bit of research and went back and picked this one up. Serial Number starts with 01, so dates to 1999; the barrel is JM stamped.

From what I've read, the 444P was only made for 3-4 years, starting in 1999. Can someone more knowledgeable confirm the dates produced? Also, I'd be interested if any knows approximately how many were produced.

I'll start looking for an original front sight hood and screws to fill the D&T tap holes when I remove the scope mount/rings.

This will go nicely with my Savage 99 375 and Marlin Model 375.

Production started in '98, roughly coinciding with the change to "Ballard" rifling for all 444s. (All P models are "Ballard" rifled.)
No one has a hard date for the end of production, or total production numbers.

The bigger question is: Why haven't I received a shipment notification yet?
All Outfitters are supposed to be shipped to me for safe-keeping.

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your rusted masses yearning to live again,
The wretched refuse of your humid closet.
    Send me the partless, broken-stocked,
The Marlins in need of new life...

I really like mine. It is an absolute hoot to shoot.

Let me know if you find a place to buy a genuine front sight and hood (I believe that they are different from the 336's).

Very nice find. Congrats. I believe that the sight hood is the same for 336,1895, and 444. Midway has them. As well as the receiver plugs for the scope mount holes. If you plan to hunt with that beauty may I make a suggestion? Add a receiver sight from Skinner (or Williams, Precision, XS) and replace the whole front sight (ramp included) with Skinners Bear Buster. At the very least leave the hood in a drawer and replace the sight insert with a fiber optic or a blade from Skinner.

Thank you; ordered them from Midway this morning.

Congrats on the new Triple-4! I am actually shooting my 444P today at the LGS range. Going to try out some 240 gr hard cast reloads with Unique. I have seen a production run between 1999-2001 posted before on MO concerning the dates of manufacture for the Outfitter. As with all things Marlin---those dates are probably not set in stone. There are sure to be exceptions. Don't know how many were made but I am guessing it can't be more than a few thousand at most.

Nice work picking that up. I missed one a few years back thinking I could go home and come back. Enjoy it!
