1952 Marlin 336SC Sporting Carbine .32Spl Lever Action

I bought it... Now what? Pretty rough but I just couldn't say no. Should I try to sand off the rust and do a reblue or perhaps sand blast it and Gun Kote...? It's not a rifle I would normally own (20" barrel) as I am a silhouette shooter and offhand shooting as in Lever Silhouette really benefits from the longer sight radius rifles...

You should bead blast to clean the rust from the pits (pores) for whatever finish you choose. Bead blasted and blued looks pretty good IMO.

I have a 1953 336sc 30 30 in mint condition,I love the Sc! Bring it back to it's former glory. I have to have my kids show me how to download a pic of my Marlins, long on pictures and short on tech! Sad to see it in that condition. Some people shouldn't have nice things!

I am guessing that with one side pitted and the other apparently in decent shape the gun was lying on its side under a bed or in a closet and got a little surface water on/in the bag. Supposedly the bore is good. I am hoping that is correct. If not It will take another handful of money and I will end up with a 500.00 gun for 750.00.

I am definitely waiting till I see how it shoots before buying a set of reloading dies for it.

My first thought was someone put in one of those zip up gun cases and forgot about it. The old codger in me sees it as a challenge. With some careful sanding most of the rust should go away. Go to Brownells and get some of their Oxpho Blue. You might be surprised in how it turns out. Just depends on how much time and/or money you want to invest.

If I blue that is the path I will take. Here in my area (Houston) the average bluing job is ~ 225.00- 250.00. Professional coatings are about the same. I have done a complete Early 39 with the Brownells blue and it turned out decent. lots of prep but worth it... I saw a coated 336 in a thread here with a laminated stock and it was right purty... I am more or less a traditionalist but ... Who knows. I might try it.
