    Caribou and brown bear

    Hello all.

Due to some health issues, last year was pretty much a lost year for me, and also for my 17 year old daughter. We're hoping to make up for it this year.

What makes this a .338 Marlin post: I shot a cow caribou with mine yesterday. It was nothing remarkable; a 200 yard shot put her down. Fresh meat is always welcome.

OK, the non-.338 part, if you fine folks will indulge me. My daughter shot her first two big game animals. Both were shot with a Savage Axis in .308 with handloads shooting 150 grain Partitions.

On Friday she shot a large brown bear that was out early. It was a 100 yard shot; the first shot put him down. I haven't measured the hide yet but I'm expecting him to tape 8.5-9 feet. The skull tapes 26.5 inches.

Yesterday she shot her first caribou, a nice fat cow. It was a ranged 170 yards. One shot to the shoulder and it went down immediately.

We have been practicing a lot because we have a daddy-daughter Africa hunt scheduled. She has shot well at the range. It was nice to see her shoot so very well in the field.

    Thumbs up

I wouldn't want to be surprised and not at the ready if I came in contact with either animal your daughter shot! Man, they grow 'em big up North!

I'll stay where I'm at here in the lower 48, the bears are smaller, less likely to attack people, and a bit safer!

Congrats on what looks to be a Hunt of a Life Time! Awesome!

Looks to me like you've raised an awesome partner AK - and I expect the story doesn't end with this successful hunt!
Good job and keep up the good work - you're raising her right!
We look forward to many more photos and stories - Alaska, Africa - heck, it don't matter! Just keep'em coming.
Good luck in the future and be safe!
