338 Marlin Express, Defying the laws of physics

« on: November 19, 2009, 09:53:49 PM »

I have been trying to shoot a deer this week. If my goal was to shoot a little spike or fork buck I would have all the shots I want. I have been holding out for the buck I got on film just before season, only problem is he isn't showing up Undecided

Tonight was slow, just a few does so when this yote showed up the scene I told my son tommy I was going to pop it. The coyote was 370 yards out on a picked bean field. I held the 300 yard cross hair on the Leupold B&C reticle just a little over the head. It looked like a real good coyote, nice blonde color and I didn't want to put a fist size hole through the hide. The coyote stopped on a terrace and gave me enough time to settle the cross hair just above it's head and I toughed off the trigger. I heard the POP from the bullet impact and when I settled back from the recoil and looked through the scope I saw a dead dawg laid out in the field. There wasn't but about five minutes of shooting time left.

The 338MX laid the smack down on it Grin Smiley

The exit side.

Tommy..my spotter

Tommy took this one, he was a little shakey

Quite a 'lights out' shot you did there! What scope are you using by the way? Do you shoot from a set of Steady Sticks or something to stabilize your rifle? You are the quintessential marksman!

The scope is a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40mm with the Boone and Crockett reticle. I did shoot from a good solid support and didn't have any wind to contend with. It is great to have my spotter with me, his 9 year old eyes see just about everything. He can spot the outline of a deer in brush at 300 yards, he spotted this coyote. I had been looking over some CRP grass trying to find a deer, when he picked up the coyote moving across the field.

What a shot!  Well, I guess I"m not too surpised.  I'm interested to hear about your problems locating the big bucks.  I've got 4 corns and 6 and an 8 or two milling around, but nothing of size, but these ghost critters that show up at night. Tongue  I've heard it all over around here.  Hunting sucks this year.  Don't know whether its the moon or what, but this may be the first time I don't get a buck with my bow in 5 years.  I won't shoot anything less than what I set out to shoot in the first place.  Rifles coming up for me, but I'm kind of down about it all right now.  Just nothing moving (even with rut).

Around here the coyotes are very guilty of running and taking down mule deer every winter. They're also tough on the new fawns in the spring. I figure every time I whack a coyote, I'm improving my chance of seeing deer.

Besides, it's fun...  Grin

There have been a handful of nice bucks shot in this area, but nothing like expected. The guy at the checkin station said they are about 200 deer less than this time last year. everyone says the same thing. Lots of little bucks, but nothing of any size. I'm convinced they are moving at night, but you just have to be out there. the kids get out of school at 2pm today so as soon as I pick tommy up we are heading back out to sit. This is where I have always said a good scope makes the difference, and I have a feeling if we get a chance at one of these big bucks it will be in the last few minutes of shooting time.

Guy,
I'll pop a coyote every chance I get. Wink

After Christmas is my time to hit the Colombia River Area for dogs. Haven't seen any in a while, might not be too good this year.

I saw that. something seems kinda fishy about that whole story. Sounds like maby some road hunting was going on, and why didn't they check it in closer? why drive all the way to Schram Park to check it in??

Actually the local friend they mentioned was from Louisville, close to Schramm, and if you have any type of state record fish, that's where you take it. They also do rack scoring seminars at Schramm, maybe it's the only place to get a good green score? Bottom line is only they know if it is on the up and up.

I've actually seen less road hunters this year, we still see some but not the steady procession we've seen in the past. Maybe it's Obamanomics Huh
