I bought a XL7 in 270 about 1 week ago. Brought it home and installed a scope and boresighted it. Went out the next day to set it. First shot about 1" off not bad worked bolt pulled hull but didn' t eject. I didn't think much of it I worked the bolt slow and pulled out hull by hand. Fired second shot close but not on so I open bolt nothing no hull at all still in chamber so I look and the extractor is gone. I have to come home and get cleaning rod to get hull out. While at home call marlin. The nice lady told me she would ship the parts out that day if I could fix it myself. I told her no problem send them on. She was great. So I take the rifle back to the range and shot 1 more shot it went through the previous hole. Looks like it may be a good rifle when fixed. So I come home and put it up to wait for the parts to fix it to come in. The nice lady at marlin sent 3 sets of extractor parts They arrived yesterday in the mail so I pulled the bolt and put in the extractor and looked and there was no ejector in the bolt. It was after hours yesterday when I discovered the missing ejector so I called marlin this morning and they said I could just ship the bolt and they could send it back to me without having to drive 160 miles to the dealer I use to pick it up. Marlin has been great helping me but when you buy a new gun you don't expect to have to send it back before you can use it. Maybe when I get this fixed it will be ready to go hunting. I would be really upset If I didnt have a room full of rifles to hunt with besides this rifle because it is tuesday and deer season opens saturday. I'm not mad with marlin but this is uncalled forto let one like this get out on a new gun that is trying to make a name .

Quality control, Roll Eyes if it happens often enough and people keep on them the quality will get better. I cannot imagin a rifle getting out of the factory in that condition, that's one of those WTF jobs that should have been caught.  I would say that more than one person dropped the ball in this case.

It's too bad you have had issues with your gun. I guess if you have to drive 160 miles to buy a gun, it would be a good idea to thoroughly check it out before you leave the store with it. Would you buy a car without checking it over good before leaving the dealer?

Most store would not let you cycle a case throught the action especially in the store. Back in the good old days, gun stores would let you take the rifle "if they knew you" and let you test fire it. If the store carried snap caps we could atleast check the extractor and ejector.

Checking for a missing ejector doesn't require a case or shell. It only requires you to look for it.

When ever I buy a gun, I remove the bolt, inspect it and the interior of the action, and look down the bore. I also lok the stock over carefully and cycle the action. I try the safety and the trigger and if the gun has a detachable floor plate, I make sure it works and latches correctly.

None of what I described requires any ammo. It requires common sense. I have many guns, and I check them all over before they leave the store. My local gun shop is only 15 minutes away and I still go thru the process.

@dms,

On the one hand, you have a point. On the other hand, some of us are foolish enough to think a brand spanking new rifle will be in good working order. On yet another hand, (wee 3 hands ma) Some of us get kinda excited about a new firearm purchase and plain forget to think of such things.

Hopefully Marlin will get this QA issue locked down sooner rather than later.

Good Shooting,
Gary

I have owned probably 5000 gun's in my life and usually check them out when buying. But this was a marlin and brand new at that. I kind of took for granted that it was all there the way it's supposed to be. Oh well I didn't miss the first day of the season. I just took a marlin that is about 20 years old and went hunting with it. I could have taken the new xl7 without the bolt since I didn't need to shoot today. I also had a ruger super blackhawk for backup. I'm not worried marlin will get it right and returned soon then I will be ready. I told the folks at marlin it must have been made on a friday evening or either a monday morning.

I would not call it broken but rather not put together completly. Quality control, pay attention to detail. TK will get it corrected and all will be good. Smiley

Well the bolt came in today. It looks like they just replaced the bolt head with a new one. I just put it in the rifle and worked it and it seemed to work fine. I will carry it out tomorrow and give it a try. The folks at marlin are ok they worked my problem out in short order. And were very helpful in getting this done and returned in a timely fashion. I was very impressed with the lady's that I talked to when calling about the issues with this rifle. They were great and handled my request very quickly and efficiently. They are a credit to the company.

Well it looks like it's fine. It was a little cold today so I only shot it at 25 yds and got the scope set there. I didn't try it at 100 yds today I will do that when it warms up a little. Today was the last day of our first season so starting tomorrow for 2 weeks its muzzle loader season. So I will be shooting my 375 H&H encore for the next 2 weeks. Then gun season opens back up. I'm sure I will have some warmer weather in that time to finish zeroing it. At 25 yds It shot 5 bullets thru a hole that after 5 shots wasnt much over 1/2". The rifle looks promising and now it functions right so after a couple of more trips out I will have confidance in it again not to mess up. I haven't shot a 270 in years The bullet's I loaded up today were bought in 1967 and have been long discontinued. They were 130gr remington bronze point's in the old red and white box. I loaded them with 59 gr of h4831sc. They seemed to work fine with this rifle. It's a smooth shooting rifle with very little recoil.
