I bought a new 1895 Cowboy, sent it in to Turnbull, the gun was rebarrelled to 50 Alaskan, Notice the barrel is much heavier that the standard Cowboy. Vintage Swivels were added with a Marlin Sling. The gun was tapped and a Williams 5D was added on the side. A pachmeyer decellerator was added and the action tuned and trigger pull adjusted to 3 pounds. I have included a close up of the machine work on the action -- notice it is opened in the ejection port.
I'm getting 2600 fps with 300 grain Barnes Originals. 2050 fps with Woodleigh 535's and 2200 fps with the Barnes 450 grain Original. For fun, I shoot 500 grain Lee casts at 1600fps.
It has put down 3 bear in 3 shots so far.

That is a superb rifle!  Someday I will own a levergun in .50 Alaskan.

I have some serious hankering for one of these 50 Alaskans. I really like that octagonal barrel, but your right, they are heavier.
That is one fine example, very nice indeed. Cheesy

Wow - heck of a rifle! 2600 fps with 300's is what my .375 H&H does... Cool.

Good looking rifle and it obviously delivers the goods. Tell us a bit about the bears? How far? Black bears or slathering grizzly?

Thanks for posting that... What a rifle! I hear only good things about Turnbull.

I've shot 3 Idaho Blacks. 2 on a spring hunt of baits at 50 yards and one on a fall hunt on spot and stalk at 170 yards. The 2 spring bears were shot this year and are still being 'rugged'. The fall bear (chocolate phase) is on the wall. 6 feet 10 inches nose to tail and 453 pounds field dressed with a 19 9/16 skull measurement. The spring bears were  5 1/2 footers, one blond and one black with a weight of about 200 pounds-- we did not bother weighing them. I used the 535 woodleigh's, one shot was all that was needed and they all dropped at the shot through both shoulders.

I'd love to have this with a 20" barrel.

I have reached up to the gun rack and taken down the .30/30 carbine by some process of natural selection, not condoned perhaps by many experts but easily explained by those who spend long periods in the wilderness areas.

That Alaskian 50 is an awsum rifle.  Shooting a bear at 170 yds is pretty good.
