Bought my first Marlin today sight unseen, should pick it up tomorrow. I'll post picks, price, details etc. after I get my hands on it. I noticed the band around the barrel and fore stock is at the very front of the fore stock instead of a couple inches back like the current models. What's the deal with this? It was made in 1982. When did they make one vs the other? If I want to replace the stock how do I specify it?
Thanks for the help and all the great info here!
Welcome to the forum! Here at MO's we have support groups for the addiction known as Marlinitus... watch out... it's contagious!

It sounds to me like you have a forend cap instead of a barrel band.
Here's a pic of one with a barrel band:
http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/Centerfire/336C.aspCouldn't find a pic with a marlin with a forend cap, but here's some rifles that have them:

Hope this helps! Someone here can chime in on how difficult it would be to replace the stock w/ a forend cap. I know one of em has done it.
