Hello all, After owning a 1894 in 44 mag for a few years, I decided it was time to buy another. This time, I bought a NIB 1894CB in 45 Colt.
When I got the 44 mag version, I put a Skinner peep sight on it and have really enjoyed it. So, I ordered one for the new rifle.
However, I didn't notice something about the new rifle. The rear sight doesn't fold down like the first one does.
Is there an easy solution to this that I'm missing? Does the rear sight assembly come off the barrel easily? If so, what is left on top of the barrel? An ugly milled-out spot?
Thanks in advance for y'all's help.

The rear sight will come right out. It will also leave the dovetail empty. All is not lost. Filler plugs can be had for the dovetail slot. My 1894 CB LTD 45 has Lyman tang mounted peep sight and it works fine with the factory sight still on the rifle.
You gonna love that 45!

The cowboy rifles come with a non-folding Marble's rear sight. Standard rifles have a Marlin folding rear sight.
georgeky is correct, with the sight elevator all the way down, and the sight insert all the way down you probably will be able to look over the rear sight with the skinner especially if you sight in at 100 yards.
If you need to remove the rear sight tap it out left to right with a brass or plastic punch. You will need a filler as the dovetail edges can be quite sharp. Some fillers tap in (right to left) and there are some that slide in and are held by a setscrew.
Hint-If you install the peep sight before you remove the rear sight, you can use the rear sight to zero the peep sight.. M.

Thanks, guys! I was hoping there would be a quick and easy solution.
Where might I find a filler? Suggestions?
And thanks for the suggestion about using the rear sight to zero the peep sight. I'm sure I would have thought of that at some point.. but not until after I'd already removed the sight!

Thanks again, guys! Just one more question and I'll leave y'all alone for a while.. Does my other 1894 have the same size dovetail for the rear sight? I'm thinking of removing that one too.

Should be the same . The blank will be slightly oversize. Use a file on the bottom of the blank to make it fit.

Chris, that's cold-hearted to show off yours before I even get to shoot mine! But, I'll get to try mine out tomorrow at your place.. maybe I'll get lucky and actually hit what I'm aiming at!

BROWNELLS has the fold down rear sight for around $30; there's a folder for less than $20 that is even lower profile. I usually use the set up with a LYMAN 66 LA rear peep and a #17 front sight. When you get past 50, you give yourself as much help as possible. I can use the peep sight and hold off off on the scope a little longer.
There's a long sad story on the 1894 44 that I had cut to 16.5 inches and carried on my saddle for 25 years.
