Today I mounted a scope I had laying around in the safe and took the 39A out for a test drive to see how good the old scope still was. I was able to bore sight and shoot in zero at 60 yards in 6 shots. One more twist of the coin, and I was doing double hits on the same hole still at 60 yards. A quarter covered 10 shots before I reloaded.
This new rifle is fantastic.
Now the bad stuff!  Lips sealed
It seems that every forth or fifth shot I would get a failure to fire. I re-cock and it goes bang every time after the FTFire.
I know the ammo is good. I have not had any problems up to this point except for one short-stroking (my bad)!
I am sure this has been covered before, but I would appreciate if someone can recap what I can do, or do I need to take it to the gunsmith?  Cry

Read my stickey in the subject, it should help your problem.

The failure to fire is usually the firing pin itself not protruding far enough past the rest of the pin.

swany,
Is this area I am removing the "stop" portion of the firing pin?

At the risk of sounding stupid, do I need to remove the firing pin to stone it back a little?

swany,
Not having a stone to remove the metal, will an ignition file work?
I have a set of fine ignition files that I used to use on the distributor setting the points on cars when I was a mechanic long ago!

swany,
I think I got it now. Took the 39 apart and removed the little plug holding the firing pin and filed just a small amount of the step in the pin that your diagram shows. I am sure this will fix the problem. If not, I will remove just a little bit more.
Can't thank you and this forum enough for the help.
Hey, does this make me a gunsmith now!!  Wink

Yes it is the stop area of the pin.

No working on your guns do not make you a gunsmith, it makes you as handy as Red Green with duct tape. Grin

I ordered the new scope for the 39A and as soon as it comes in, I will test the rifle again to see if I am getting any failure to fires again and will post.
Maybe I will just go ahead and try it tomorrow with the iron sights if my eyes will allow me to see it!   :

Shocked Don't do what i just did with my new 39A firing pin that was having FTF. I stoned the wrong side of the firing pin (the outside) making it strike the center instead of the rim. That's after telling and showing myself twice where it should have been stoned.  Going to file that down and repeat correctly, hoping I have enough metal left to make it right. It was a Numrich firing pin that was not right to begin with. Dang, there went $20.00

swany posted the spot to stone down, so I hope I got it right the first time.
You can actually see where it was hitting the rim. It looked a little worn in that spot.
I hope to know tomorrow if I did good or bad.

Did the stoning help with your FTF?

DAD,
I have not yet tried the rifle this morning.
Got to get my daily chores out of the way first  Undecided
Thought I would go out this afternoon to give it a try.
I will post back here as soon as I do give it a try though.

Strsange that you should ask TallGrass, yes.
The new scope came in about an hour and half ago and I got it mounted and went back to my range.
I loaded ten rounds and here is what happened:
first pull, click, bang.
second pull, click, bang.
And after that it was click, bang, click, bang, click, click, bang, click, bang, bang, bang, click, bang, click, click, bang.
I did this with two strings and it was about equal. First would fail and then second would fire. I had a few that clicked two times before firing.
I took out the firing pin and stoned it a little more. Ran ten more rounds and fired. The string missed about two times. I am afraid to remove any more off in fear that I may rupture the rim.
I know the ammo is good because I can rapid fire in the 10/22 all day long without one single miss.
I am getting a little frustrated now!

Is your rifle a NEW rifle or one that was previously owned?  I am surprised with the number of reports of such issues with the 39A s .  I have an 1993 Golden  39AS  and have never had any issue with it.

With luck, one of the more knowledgeable folks here will help you sort it out.

Thanks for the update.
