I recently picked up a 1895 LTD V and I'm wanting to change the sights but I'm not sure what I want to do yet so I figured I'd see what you guys think. I'm basicly looking at 3 types of sights

1) Lyman or Marble tang sight, I don't think I want a vernier but if any of you use them let me know what you think.
2) Lyman or Williams receiver mounted peep sight.
3) Smith barrel mount flip up with elevator

#2 and 3 are the ones I'm looking at the hardest so far. I'm also trying to figure what to do on the front, I noticed this gun has a .340 dovetail whereas all the globe sights I've found are .375 although that can be changed with a file or on the mill. I've also thought about the fiber optic fronts but I'm trying to keep the gun traditional looking so I may just stay with the factory bead. I should also mention the gun will be used for hunting and informal long range shooting. Thanks ahead of time for any input.

I have the scout rail and the XS system for my 1895SS and I really like it but right now I have a 2-7 Leupold on the SS but I wanted to go with something more old school traditional and more precision for long range on the LTD but thanks for the input.

Use a yellow/gold fiberoptic front sight and tell everyone it is brass!  Grin

What's the intended use?  If it is woods hunting then the tang sights are more fragile - the receiver mounted Lyman/Williams would be the best choice for a peep. Pay attention to the aperature size - the small ones that work in bright sun usually don't work much at all in the dark of dawn in the woods.

If it's for range use then get whatever turns you on.....  Tang sights with globe fronts are fun and can be very accurate. I'm using a full buckhorn from Shiloh on my Sharps - it is very similar to the Smith flip up.  I have no problem with the sight but have only shot to 200 yards with it.  It is the handiest for hunting in the woods.  I have it set to be right on with the buckhorn for about 75 yards and then flip it up for 200 yards.

You might recheck your front dovetail as it likely is 3/8" or .375 which is pretty much standard on modern US made firearms.  It is measured at the bottom of the dovetail. I have a LTD IV and it has the .375 3/8 dovetail.  My Marlin has a Lyman receiver sight and the lowest brass front bead I could get to work with the Lyman.  I did this to keep them from accidentally being knocked or bent out of adjustment.  I'll be carrying this 1895 45-70 this weekend for the opening of Minnesota's deer season.

Check out skinnersights.com.  You could look at the Skinner Sights forum on this Board to see how folks like it.  Of course, I'm a bit biased.

the intended use will mostly be paper but it may see action on east side of the state for mulies and elk or the west side for blacktails and roosevelt. it is definitely a .340 front and a .375 rear. The williams firesight sets with the peep and fiber optic front as a set are sold with a .340 front for the marlin.

I bought a LTD V a few months back that came with a Smith ladder rear sight, it looks really nice but is still more or less a standard open sighting system on a ladder. I have skinner sights on 4 other lever actions and really prefer them. I am considering contacting Dr. Skinner about one of his ladder peep sights and then pull the Smith ladder and put it on something else. The peep sight works way better than a regular open sight especially if you have older eyes. Take a look at the Skinner sights section at the bottom of the forum, email Dr. Skinner about what you are looking for and see what you can come up with. Happy Shooting.

I have several marlins with the williams and lyman peep sight's. I have never shot a peep sighted rifle before and am really impressed with the peep sights. I shoot as good with them almost as when using a scope. I would not have believed it was possible had I not tried them. I shoot the peeps a whole lot better than regular open sights. It amazes me that all you do is put the front sight where you want the bullet its super simple and super fast.

I put one of the Skinner sights on my Guide Gun.  It looks good and shoots even better.  Tim has made one of the toughest sights for the hunting market.
(I have to mention that I got the sights about 3 days after I ordered them.  Tims shipping and the prompt delivery were a major plus...)
This is where I say 'Thanks again Tim'!!!

They certainly are an upgrade from a factory sight and give those of us with old eyes an option besides glass.

I have to attest that those skinners are the best looking and most simple peeps out there. Also, unlike the XS, you can use the ghost ring or install the aperture for more accurte shootin. What more could you want?

I have a LTD V also.  It has a Williams peep sight on it now.  I also had to get a lower front sight to get it into a usable adjustment on the peep.  The original sight is set up high for that high comb on the stock.
It' set up more for scope use I think.
