I have a Levematic mod. 57M and was wondering about experiences with any of the heavier .22mag. ammo offered these days by Rem., Win., Fed., etc.  I would be using it for the usual small game targets out to a max. of 90/100 yds.  It's been a long time since I have used this round for small game, so I thought I would ask for some feed back on it. I am aware of the new lighter weight/faster offerings, but I have always liked the heavier stuff. Thanks for any and all responses.............Ratchet

I have only used lighter stuff in my 22 magnum and it works fine for longer shot like you want unless the wind is high. I puchase what is on sale.

I have tried heavier (50 gr Federals) and lighter (34 gr WW, etc), but I always go back to WW 40 gr.  It is simply the most accurate ammunition in my .22 Mag.   YMMV.   Wink

My "go to" 22WMR round is the 40 grain CCI "TMJ" of the (identical) Federal 40 grain FMJ. Accurate and minimal meat damage. Otherwise, Winchester 40 grain JHP's are excellent. I recently tested some prototype 40 grain HP that was seriously accurate with a very fine true jacketed bullet. Expansion was excellent. When I get word it's gone into production I'll let you guys know.~Andrew

Another vote for the original wmr cartridge- the 40 grain Winchester SuperX. It still shoots consistently well out of every 22mag rifle I've ever owned.
Although not a 'heavy', the Remington Premier 33 grain is extremely accurate out of my 882ss, and I've been VERY impressed with its one-shot capability on game and varmints (even the occasional coyote) out to 100 yards or so.

Thank you all for the replies. I think I will try some of the 40 grainers from the 3 big makers. I still have some from many a year ago, and I think I will pick up some new stuff. Thanks again..................Ratchet

Huh
I have never seen any 60 gr 22 Mag, Aguila 22 LR 60 gr Sniper Sub Sonic yes, but not Mag.  Well, I might be missing out, but I think that I will stick to the WW 40 JHP/FMJs.

Another vote for the 40 gr super-X hp. (grey box)

Do not mistake it for the 45 gr dynaturd (in a white box), the same color as crap paper.

My Marlin .22 mag shoots the Winchester 40 grain Super X's the best. They seem to hit very hard to.

A few years back Industrias Tecnos (Aguila's parent company) was looking into a 60 grain 22WMR round. I advised them to forget it. Think it would stabilize at 1400 - 1500 fps from a standard 1-16" twist?? Not well enough... Sad~Andrew
