Well Once again......I dont give a rats tail what the "experts" say. Those very same experts are the folks that tell the "green" shooters/hunters that ask thier advice to do what works for them!I like the versatility that the see thrus allow. The game and areas that are hunted vary widely. It affords me the ability to use iron or glass depending on the shot presented.Personally I am alot more confident in shots of 70 yards or less through my irons as that is how they are sighted. The scopes are sighted for longer distances.TO ME.......I have no doubt that I can make a clean ethical kill either way,or I dont take the shot. Now if I were only concerned with putting three bullets through the same hole in a paper target at 100 yards(which I have ALMOST done with both of these rifles ) off a bench rest.I might agree with the experts. But these work well for me,for what I use them for..........and I aint givin em up for nobody nohow.Guess I will be a novice till I cant see any more.At least there are TWO of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Curiosity got the better of me,so I pulled these 2 rifles out of the safe and took off the tiaras. The bottom rifle in the picture is a 1895MR.As you might see,no see thru mounts.Weaver bases and medium rings. The top is 338MX with SEE THRU MOUNTS!!!!!!!! On the 1895,the distance from the top of the reciever to the bottom of the scope tube is 11/16ths of an inch.On the 338Mx WITH see thrus, the same measurement is 7/8ths of an inch(7/8=14/16)A WHOPPING 3/16ths of an inch.

Dvhel. My point exactly!!!! It may look 2 feet higher, but it's all in your mind. There is a lot of height with regular bases and mounts where all of that is eliminated with the see thru's! 3/16" WOW my neck!!! 36 years of see thru's never gave me an accuracy problem! My reason for starting this was to show people that there was a very small amount of difference. The ruler does not lie.

To me they both serve their purpose. Like the difference between plastic wrap and reynolds wrap, they both work. But you can see through one.

I see them as I would a rear spoiler on a VW Bug. They ruin the lines, and don't accomplish anything that couldn't be done better by something else. Most compromises answer NEITHER of the uses they're supposed to help.

Again, the deer haven't yet been told this, I will let them in on it here in a couple of weeks, when gun season opens here in Alabama. Stir, stir, stir.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...........and I be holdin on to my girls with the see thru mounts. My guns are NOT wall decorations or "competiton" bench shooters. They go to woods or the hills or the prarie........and they take game. THAT is beautiful!

Shooters using optics have always had to be concerned about 'scope eye' unless it's a scout type mount. Back in their day (when see-thru mounts were popular) they put some dents in a few foreheads. It seems some shooters tended to crawl up the stock some when using the iron sight option in a hurry. Never personally happened to me but I always considered it a legitimate concern when using the see-thru option.
