Interesting comparison:
.22 Velocitor - 1,435 f.p.s. @ muzzle / 1,230 f.p.s. @ 50 yards
.25-20.........- 1,460 f.p.s. @ muzzle / 1,300 f.p.s. @ 50 yards

meplat: (bullet nose diameter)
.15" - .22 Velocitor (increased from .12" )
.15" - .25-20

Based on the same meplat diameter and very similar velocities, it would seem that on small game, at a distance of 50 yards and less, where there would be complete penetration, the performance of both cartridges would mirror each other since the heavier 86gr. bullet of the .25-20 would not be a factor in that situation.

If I had a .25-20, it would be interesting to compare the two. Hopefully, I'll rectify that situation within the next year or two.
In the meantime, would anyone be interested in comparing the two cartridges? I'll supply the .22 Velocitor's with the .15 Meplat.

As long as you aren't shooting Velociters in a Marlin Semi-Auto rifle, you'll be fine Smiley

Bolt or lever can handle 'em Smiley

Oh I don't know, Ive shot the Velocitors in my Marlin 60 and they shoot and function just fine.  Ditto for the Stingers which are 200 fps faster but accuracy stunk with the stingers.  The Velocitors aren't really that much faster than standard ammo.  It's that flat nose that makes them so effective just like the slower CCI SGB.

Not sure a comparison of the 22 Velocitor is a fair comparison to the 25-20 though it might be fun to find out.  Both might have the same meplat and leave the muzzle at the same speed but 25-20 has 200% more energy, is twice as heavy, and larger in diameter.  The Velocitor would most likely expand to about .25 or .27 where as the 25-20 most likely would open up to .30 or .32 in diameter, even at 50 yards.  Course this is just a guesstimate on my part as I've never shot a 25-20.  Dang it........now I'll be keeping my eye open for a 25-20..........like I really need another lever rifle.

On small game you can figure they are equal in every way.

When you ramp up to larger game such as Coyotes, large raccoon and such the 25-20 steps up with it's heavier bullet.

The next step is large game such as deer or hogs, wouldn't hog hunt with either I would deer hunt with either but the 25 cal would be legal the .22 not.

Jump to the .22 mag with a heavy bullet and they are pretty much equal with the 25-20

I hunt quite a bit of small game with a 25-20. I have three of them: a Winchester 92, a Savage 23B and a Sportco (Aussie) Martini Cadet Sporter. I shoot a 72 grain, Lyman #257420 gas checked bullet at 1840 fps and it is a long step above the 22LR in any form. Far better than a heavy-hitting 22WMR : 20% faster than a 50 grain WMR with 50% more bullet. Big jacks hit at 100 yards get knocked over hard by the 25-20. Love it.~Andrew

Quite a lot on the 25-20.

25-20 factory loads in the Winchester brand don't expand.

Full throttle, no rimfire remotely compares to a .25-20.  2200 f/s with a 75 grain bullet is easily possible.

I've got a load for 25-20 that works well on deer with that 86gr. bullet.  For me, the round is near to being perfect for varmits of anything I've got.  Shot a large rodent with one this weekend.  He was chewing on my walnut tree next my dam. Sad Shocked  He weighed 45#., and I'm glad I had the 25-20. No 22 velocitor would have been adequate for my thinking.  Where legal, it would be ideal for turkey at a lower velocity as well.  Its easy to pick the feather you want to hit.  I think mine eeks out about 1950fps with that 86gr. load.  Its also my second most accurate load/gun.

Fellow lever gunners,
Thank you for your input. No question that a higher velocity .25-20 haas it way over any .22 rimfire and .25 Rimfire for that matter.
I was comparing the current factory loaded .25-20 to the velocitor when both have the same meplat. Game would be squirrels, rabbits and the like where complete penetration would be the norm.  A not so good hit with a standard .22 could result in the loss of the animal whereas the same hit with a .25-20 would probably give a better outcome.....the same I think with the velocitor.......
