I hate to throw away the jacketed bullets I already have for the 38-55's. I just started shooting cast a couple years back. I have a bunch of cast bullets too.

I have been shooting a 245 grain bevel base cast bullet with 30 grains of IMR 30-31 and getting great 100 yard accuracy. No leading far as I can tell.

Gotcha!

Are you buying your cast stuff?  Or do you cast your own yet?

44

So far my cast bullet stockpile consists of various bullets that I was given, bought or traded for. Half or more were given to me by a couple buddies that do a lot of casting. I am just trying to get enough stuff to get going myself. The only molds I have gotten so far are for the 38-55. Bought a custom Lee .380 sizing kit a few days ago so I am getting closer. I will get molds for the 45-70, 44's, 45's, 30-30, and .35 as money allows. I also need a new set Cowboy dies. Have been using my 375 Lee dies and they don't open the case up enough for the .380 and .381 bullets I am shooting. Work fine on jacketed bullets but ends up shaving lead when seating the cast bullets sometimes. Got a new iron stove in my shack a few days back and I plan to give casting a go soon. Have been saving wheel weights for a long while. Must have 10 or 12 buckets full in the barn that I can't lift. Grin

The 44-40 is at my dealers house. The 44 mag is in route to there. I am looking at another rifle yet so It may be a while before I get them all bunched up at his place at one time. He is an old buddy and lives 80 miles away so I will pick up a load and visit a spell.

I am getting a bit fidgety myself. hehehe! Deer season will open here soon. Maybe next Saturday.

George, here is a neat story of a deer harvest with the historic .44-40........

Sorry I hadn't replied to this before now. I had read that aricle before on Paco's site and enjoyed the story.

Mark, I finally went to my buddies yesterday and picked up the 44's and have shot both with fine results. I will try to get a new pic or two up with a day or so.

Nope, not dead yet. Been busy and had lots of puter trouble for a long while now. Got a dab-blame virus and shut me down. Had to give a feller in town 70 bucks to get it jumpstarted again.

"How good do they shoot"?
Right where they were pointed. hehehe! Seemed like both shoot very well. However, that 1894 Sporter kicks as hard as my 45-70 with that Marlin Safety buttplate on it. Of course I was shooting some RYO hot loads. Was just plinking at a few field rocks. Didn't get any pics yet but I will in the morning. The 44-40 is a joy to shoot and very accurate it seems. I am shooting light duty plinking loads in it at around 900 FPS since that is all I have for it as of now.

Purty shore I's goin lik'em both.

 JBedsoe,

I will try to do better. hehehehe!

 44-40 Willy

Looks like I may become a big 44-40 fan myself. It shoots a lot better than that Vaquero 44-40 I had a few years back. I very well expect this one to become my favorite 1894 Cowboy rifle since it is in an original caliber instead of the 44 mag and 45 Colt.
