Actually, I love it! This is close to being tied with my .444, as my favorite rifle. Each fills a different need, so they really do not have to fight for my affection.
It really took seeing and handling it in person, to make me apprciate how well Marlin did with this rifle.

If all goes well, here is a pic or two of my new baby..... She had some nicks and scrapes, which I sanded offever so lightly with a scotchbrite pad. I then polished the wood for like 123234 hours with a rag and some lemon oil. The wood looks a lot beter now, in my opinion. Very nice rifle! Just wondering though, never having handled one of these, what is the round/white mark immediately in front of the rear sling swivel stud?

That is the trademark Marlin bullseye. It is in every walnut stock that leaves the factory. For a short time in late 2007 and early 2008 the bullseye was dropped but was brought back after complaints of Marlin owners. The sling swivels are after market. Cowboy models do not come with them.
The 1895 CB is a sweet rifle.

Thanks for the quick reply George! I've always been more of a black rifle/1911 guy, so I'm on a little bit of a learning curve with the traditional lever guns!:)

Well,
I looked around last night and found a like new .45-70 Cowboy in the original box, with all factory accessories/manuals/lock, etc...on another fourm for $400.00 less that what I would've had to pay for it new here in Canada! Rifle has less than a couple boxes of ammo through it and looks like new!

I was wondering about that. This is the first cowboy I have ever seen in person, so I did not know. My Marlin catalogs do show the cowboy without the swivels, which did throw me off.

In actuality the 1895 Cowboy isn't that long compared to bolt action sporters. I laid mine next to a brand new Win Mod 70 Deluxe in 270 with a 22 inch barrel and I think the Cowboy was 1/2" longer. If I were to be traipsing around where critters have big teeth, claws or tusks I would feel a whole lot more comfortable with the Cowboy. I also like the fact that the gun holds a lot of rounds whether I would have time to use them or not.

I also like the high capacity. That was one of the things that attracted me to the cowboy initially. Hee in NJ, there is a hi-cap magazine ban. The common AR mags are 10 round. My cowboy hold virtually the same amount in the tube, but the bullets are gigantic .45's.

I thought I was going to miss out on this chapter of Marlin's production lines. With two 1886's a Trapdoor and a fine Shiloh sharps, I really did not need another 45-70. Or so I thought. My decision to purchase an unfired 1895 was strictly a matter of greed, as that is who I am. It remained unfired actually, for some time, waiting patiently for me to find time to discover what I had done. My first time out, I fired it exactly three times, before I was recalled to work. It was not and never would be, my Browning 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine. While that has not changed, it intregued me as a rifle having qualities different than any other. That has remained a constant and another fine rifle has been discovered. Larry

Thanks for the quick reply George! I've always been more of a black rifle/1911 guy, so I'm on a little bit of a learning curve with the traditional lever guns!:) I got a cowboy action shooting (wild bunch) set-up for my Colt 1911 for Christmas. Wanted to tie the 1911 into the cowboy theme. I was really into the black rifles for years, except mine is in desert tan furniture. I just kept on having problems with the stupid thing (as did my friends), problems which never seem to occur with any lever action I have ever seen, as of now. Now, the 45/70 cowboy is the black rifle of days gone by, in my mind.
