I have a Winchester 1895 in 30-40.  Can you install a .308 liner in it?

Will the 1895 handle the pressure of a .308? It is higher than a .30-06.

Handle is a relative term, but DON"T DO IT. The 308 is loaded very high to make it 30-06 equivelent or close.

The 95 is strong BUT even the new Brownings do not hold up to very high preasures, I have seen o couple of 270's that were so springy after alot of use I would'nt suggest using them with factory or the light Mag loads that are around. under 45,000 PSI they seem to last forever.

I have already done it but my statement/ question was poorly worded.  I wanted the bore relined to .308 diameter maintaining the .30-40 chamber.  I can't conceive of any one wanting a .308 Win. when they already have a .30-40, .300 Sav, .303 Enfield, 7.62x54R cartridge.  These cartridges produce 90% or better of what the .308 Win. produces and do it at lower pressure.  The shotee will never know the difference.

I got a fellow in Washington to do the reline for me.  My old 95 shoots as well or better than it did when new; 3 to 3,5 inches at 230 yards.
