Snakes down that-a-way aren't too bad.  Lived there for years without seeing or dealing with any of the poisonous varieties.

The ticks are what you need to watch out for and protect yourself against.

Mosquitoes aren't terribly bad for compared to the versions available in the northern Mid-West.

Other thing not mentioned was the spiders.  The area is known for both the Black Widow and Brown Recluse.  Generally not too big of an issue, especially in pedestrian traffic areas, but something to be wary of.

Critters and crawlers aside, it really is a beautiful area with incredible variety.

                                                      luck!

I tell ya Squacks, I've been runnin hard, but I still have my belly so I guess I haven't run hard enough! I wish I could make it to the hunt this year but I have obligations that preclude it unless things go bad or something.

I have slept in that hammock and I thank you again for returning it to me. My boys managed to kill it somehow. We had a two of them hanging up in the back yard and we've had the three of us in it before. Well I left to go inside and they came in a minute later telling me that they broke it. I wondered what or how they managed to do so...the whole end ripped off!  Shocked I'll fix it soon enough.

No Fox Squirrels around here, but I did see one back home. It's a protected species (DELMARVA Fox Squirrel) so it's lucky it hid from me before I could draw a bead on it. I still haven't blooded that .17HM2 yet, but I have plans to take it squackin this fall. My boys are older now and we're going huntin!

Did I tell you I found a 1925 vintage Model 12? I need to find out what size chamber it has, I think it's a 2.5" and only takes short shells.

Now, as the time draws near, time and money seem to be slipping through my fingers. Looks like I just might have to postpone this, till next year?

howdy all;

here is a link to some descriptions of the hunt and an assortment of pictures.

there were lots of squirrels and we got some of them. they seemed to be traveling all day and only stopping to feed a little before dark which makes rifle shooting fun!

i estimate we got 100+ squirrels and it will get better yet this year.

there are 2 pages relating to the hunt.

Greetings from a newbie.  I just joined and missed your hunting adventures but found the thread to be very interesting. I grew up in that area soooooo many years ago and hunted squirrels and rabbits as a boy in and around Jones' Ridge, just north on highway three from Wolf Lake.  and over in Missouri near Cape Girardeau. Your story brought a lot of fond memories of hunting with my cousin who is like a brother to me. Those rolling hills are beautiful this time of year when the hardwoods turn to color.

Since I am way out here in the Evergreen State, I doubt that I will be able to hunt with you fellows next year, but then again one never knows the future might bring.

SQUACKS, I happened to be near Ol' Shawnee Town this last weekend and stayed at Round Pond with a friend. Several there told of taking 20 or more last week? They had a cookout on Sunday and we dined on deep fried squirrel, jalapeno hushpuppies, bar-b-qued chicken and(of course)fresh caught crappies from their lake and many other dishes chased by Bud Lite. Need I say it was all "delicious"!
We drove down for the Sword of Bunkerhill degree at the Benton Masonic lodge(my excuse why I couldn't attend this year).
