Squacks,
About the firewood, I live one end of a street that is close to 1/2 mile long. The cleanup crew started at the far end of the street at 7:00am and worked untill 2pm rotating trucks to hall off the debris. When they got to where I started piling the debris it took them 4 hours (from 2pm to 6pm)to hall off just what I had put out on the street.
Yes there was much firewood that could have been put to use somewhere in the country but it was hauled off to a land fill or burned here locally. I saved a few of the straight trunk pieces for a friend to split for firewood. She saved me some quality elm that I will have some lumber made out of.
I guess every cloud has a silver lining.

IS that silver lining the city recycling the wood? HEHEHE. Up here the recycle goes into the same hole the kitchen waste goes into. Steve

I probably won't be able to make this one either. :/ I need to use my leave wisely as I have to attend Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter (one weekend for one and the other the following) and a couple other things this year. Once I leave the East I hope to have time to poop again.

Hi all:
I just saw this post. Won't be able to make it since I moved to New Jersey from Carbondale (Makanda). I used to live at the intersection of US 51 and Makanda Road, right on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest. My place had a section (640 acres) so there wasn't any need to go to elsewhere to go hunting The biggest problem with squirrel hunting in September is chiggers. I went once - note once - in September and got the worst case of chigger bites imaginable. There were literally thousands of chigger bites all over me, to the point that I spent three days sitting in a bathtub full of baking soda. The doctor prescribed a course of prednisone, but I am always reluctant to deal with that stuff.
My advice is to use lots and lots of insect repellent - something that is good for chiggers.
Come September I will be bowhunting in Idaho - no chiggers or mosquitoes or even pollen.

In Iowa as a boy, I hunted squirrel a lot. But we could only shoot the males. How could we tell you ask We walked up and shook the tree until we heart the Knuts rattle! CJ

chiggers are the juvenile bugs of,... like bedbugs... or some such insect. they are attracted to a heat source and carbon dioxide. which makes your skin yummy, basically they are attaching themselves to a foodsource as they grow up to their final form. http://insects.tamu.edu/extension/bulletins/L-1223.htmlpermethrin is one of the same repellents well used for fleas, and works very good, but it is now getting harder to find. There used to be one flea spray company, you could get their products from Petsmart, or usually a veterinarians' place, that had this as it's active ingredient, and it works darn well.
