My experience with the 45-70 cartridge has been limited to "loading it for bear" out of my custom GS, and it excels at knocking down the heavy duty 4-leggers I have hunted...but I sure do enjoy reading the history of the round and how the retro guys are enjoying the nostalgia of days gone by!  Thanks for the article... I grew up going to Sandy Hook beach.  The water was always cold and there's some neat military buildings there to explore, complete with canons.

Hickok45- Your statement that the .45/70 is not a sucessful round can be refuted many times. You take your .45 to Kodiak Island, and I'll take my Marlin .45/70 SS Guide Gun and we'll see who fares better against a 1,200 lb. Brownie. Where do you want the funeral flowers delivered?   Grin Grin

I've been to Fort Hancock myself a few times.   The old protective walls, the cannon, and the magazines are awesome.
