Nice hog! Looks like a Texas Hog to me. I went to hunt my feeder Saturday only to find that it had run out of corn. 300 lbs. in less than 6 weeks. I'll reload the next time that I go down and do some resetting on the timer. Lots of signs around.

JC,

That little boar weighed about 150#-160# my best guess.  As usual there was a tremendous ground shrinkage when I got to him.  There was not one flea or tick on him.  He had not been breeding and had no smell.

Any heck yes we eat em.  We had a shoulder Sunday evening after I shot him EARLY Saturday morning.  Sorry but I don't remember if it was the right or the left one though.   Folks that know how to prepare wild hawgs like them much better than domestic pork and I am one that prefers the wild much more.  And no there is no gamey taste at all like there is in venison IF, like venison it is prepared correctly.  None of the hawgs I have shot had to have any preparation at all except for the marinade I use.  All my Bambi loving kin have been converted to prefer the taste and leaness feral hog meat.  In fact, unless a processor adds fat to the sausage it will stick to the skillet if you are not careful.  I use a couple of ounces of oil.

Nice piggies! I can't wait 'till I can go hunting with my new XLR in .450. Do you prefer the hard cast to a jacketed bullet? I heard the hard cast doesn't damage as much meat. What's your $.02?

BTW - the BEST pork I ever ate was a ham from a 90 lb wild pig. My dad shot one while deer hunting. We dug a hole in the ground, put some rocks in the bottom. Lined the top of the hole with a ring of rocks. Added one 10# bag of charcoal and a BBQ grill on top. Slow cooked for 6 hours, basting every 15 minutes with wine and spices.

I have to admit it looked like a burnt piece of %^$%^$ - once cut into the juices started flowing out of it. That was the best meat I've ever eaten!  Cheesy

I prefer the neck shot exclusively and right in the center of the neck if you can get it!!  For that spot either the Hornady Jacketed or hardcast will work equally well with just a small hole in and a small hole out with little to no bloodshot meat.  If you are a shoulder shooter I definitely recommend a good hardcast boolit.

VTDW, Been there , Done that. So far I haven't missed on the first shot since I had a trigger job done. I still gotta learn how to hit them on the run
now. Right now they are hitting our wheat and rye food plots that have headed out. It should be great hunting for the next month or so.
The grain is so tall that all that I can see, from an elevated deer stand, is
the tops of the plants shaking. I watched for an hour and a half until this on stepped out. In a few weeks they'll have it stomped down enough for a lot better shooting.

Torque,

On second shots I usually hold on the tip of the snout if they are under 100 yd.  Sometimes it even works.

Good morning gentlemen,
I have two pics to add to this post.
The first is a CA coast deer I took with my 1911 (not a marlin but "big bore").

The second is a three point from the California inland season I took with my Marlin 1895 Cowboy 45-70 last Saturday.
