Picked these two up in about a half hour this morning. Two for two. Not bad for a 52 year old Mountie, and 51 year old eyes! Roe

Got this one tonight about 10pm. He's "lucky" number seven so far this season.

I am not impressed with what the 52 year old mountie did; a 52 year old mountie could do that everyday for the next 52 years. It's the 51 year old eyes that could see the open sights that I'm impressed with.

Got to get after them again. Brought home 4, but shot 5. I couldn't find one. There were 2 in a tree, I shot one then started following the other one in the scope and when it stopped I shot it. I then couldn't be sure where it was that I shot the first one. I looked for a long time with no results. I could've been looking in the wrong place for all I know.

Nice batch of bushytails, Sarge! I can almost smell the Brunswick stew from here.
We have quite a few black squirrels around Michigan, in pockets of population, generally where grey squirrels occur. It's said they are just a color phase of the grey squirrel, and I suppose that's true, as their size, vocalizations, and habits, mimic the greys. But there are areas I hunt, where I see Fox and black in abundance, yet never see a grey. Maybe this color phase has become the dominant color in those areas. The far majority are jet black, with a glossy coat. I've taken some where the guard hairs are tipped in grey, others with a predominantly grey underbelly.
Albino! Now that would be interesting. I would guess they would stand out quite a bit. I have seen Fox squirrels with all black underbellies, black where a normal Fox squirrel is usually pale. Interbreeding with the black/grey population or just a latent gene? I have no idea. I generally pass on them, hoping they will spread the odd coloration.
I once took a squirrel that was a chocolate brown, unlike anything I've seen before. Larger like a Fox, but very unusual. He was backlit and I unaware of his unique color, or I would have passed on the shot. I have a 35mm pic around here somewhere I'll try to find and scan.

Made it out again. It was 28 degrees when I headed for the timber. The squirrels were hard to find. I had to hike way back into the timber to a horse shoe valley and that's where I found them. I shot 2 that fell into the valley. After making my way back from picking them up I was beat and still had to hoof 3/4 mile back to the truck. I did manage to get a limit though.
