My buddy Mike and I, headed out after work last Friday to an area outside Caliente NV. About 2.5 hours N.E. from Vegas and camped out for the night under the stars and got an early start this morning. Well it started off as a Coyote hunt but after 5 or so stands without even seeing a coyote we decided to get after some jackrabbits, found a large rock outcropping and worked the edges, the rabbits were plentiful and we quit counting kills after a while, my partner was using a 12 gage and I was using my Contender in .204 Ruger, after he watched me pick one off the rocks at over 100 yds he started using his .223. After a wile I changed over to my Ruger 50th .357 to make it interesting. I caught this one in the head running past me at about 30 yards. My partner had just shot at it twice, I'm glad he saw me make the shot otherwise he would not have believed me We had a great time, no coyotes but I think we will remember this hunt for quite some time.

Hey guys! I am new to hunting and never considered eating squirrels but wonder how it is and whether I should go get my .22 and find me a squirrel or two. The way you describe fryin' up those buggers sounds amazing! I wonder where to go, though? I'm in California and I'm not sure where I'm allowed to hunt animals like squirrels.

What part of Ca? if you are in Southern Cal I would say forget the squirrel hunting. Back in the early 1960s I used to hunt gray squirrels in Norhern CA (Plumas County) in the high Sierras. You need to be looking for tree suirrels (not ground type, except for survival) and in Northern Ca you want to hunt the valley/meadow edges in tall hard woods (not conifers). Hope this helps! Thanks Cascade, always a help!
I live in Sacramento and see the damn things everywhere, mostly in trees. Guess I could go out to them oak-studded hills and try my luck? You ever been hunting down in this part of the state any?

Years go I used to hunt pheasants and dcuk aroung Marysville (to the North of Sacramento) . That was a long time ago (1961-62 time frame). I used to cruise into a "Mels" Drive-in down on J St in Sacramento in my 57 Chevy convertible. Wish I had it now. Sold it for $500 bucks when I was in a bind. Cascade Jinx

Got this bugger a couple of months ago and was fed up shooting the 10/22 so finally went out and bought a Marlin 917vt. Never looked back. Up here in Oregon where I live not a whole lot of gray squirrels, just sage rats and rock chucks.

Is I have never seen a rock chuck, I assume this is one. Has anyone ever tried eating one of those. It looks like one of our fox squirrels that doesn't have any trees to climb to eliminate the excess weight. That thing has started my cajunized taste buds salivating something awful. SS

SS That is a rockchuck indeed. I have tried eaten them and they are quite chewy. That one was almost 20 pounds though...

After a couple bad shots with a 12 gauge, I decided not to add any more lead pepper to the meat so got out this trusty .22 revolver that I was also carrying with me to get the job done right.

I have trouble understanding why there is no squirrel season here in Washington state. Hunted them in California, Virginia and Maryland as Uncle Sam moved me from place to place... Plenty of squirrels here in the woods, but no hunting for them. Do varmints, grouse and rabbits count? Washington is a big timber state, and the thought is that squirrels help to plant many new trees when they pull the seeds out of pine cones, store them for the winter, and then forget about them. I lived in Spokane for 20 years, and that's the answer I got when I asked a game warden why there was no squirrel hunting. So it was the timber industry, not the bunny huggers that did it. The bunny huggers were the ones that got fur trapping outlawed.
