After...

Fried squirrel, mashed taters and white gravy, corn on the cob and biscuits.  Wash it down with some iced tea!!

My 21 year old son and I use identical Marlin 17VS rifles with Simmons AETEC 3.8x12x44AO scopes on them.  They are some squirrel killing rifles!!

Got this one a coupl'a months ago. Was workin' in my gun room one day & heard something hitting the roof. Stepped outside & saw this GBT busily shredding pecans right above my P/U that was parked beside the building, right under neighbor's pecan tree. Stepped back inside to see what firearm was available. Nothin' outside the vault 'cept my old single six & a 9mm, so I quickly stuffed the Ruger's cylinder with CCI 22Short Target rounds (I'm inside the city limit & the local constabulary sorta frown on shootin' here   ), stepped back outside, cocked the revolver while raising it to aim, & fired as soon as the sights were on the squack. Now, granted it wasn't the longest shot, probably 30-40 ft, but I'm far from being a good handgunner so I was kinda 'tickled' when she immediately dropped to the ground, kicked a few times & expired by the time I got to her. The bullet entered just under the right eye & exited top 'o the head for a good clean kill. She'd been nursing little ones but was dry so I didn't feel bad about killing a 'mom'   . Oh, she tasted pretty good in dumplings along with a couple of other pecan thieves I'd gotten a few days before the season opened

Here's the pecan thieves after getting their just desserts

Sorry for the late reply...

What I do is to take the squirrels and cut them up, roll them in flour and whatever seasoning you like, and then brown them.  I then drain the grease and leave the "crispies" in the skillet with the browned squirrel.  I then add water to bring it up about half way on the squirrel, cover and slow simmer it for 2 to 2.5 hours, adding water as needed so not to burn.  By then, the meat is so tender it will just fall off the bone.  Add corn on the cob, mashed potato's and gravy, biscuits and iced tea and it's eating time.

It's so good that your tongue will reach up and slap your forehead.

I have trouble understanding why there is no squirrel season here in Washington state. Hunted them in California, Virginia and Maryland as Uncle Sam moved me from place to place... Plenty of squirrels here in the woods, but no hunting for them.

Do varmints, grouse and rabbits count?  Cheesy

Bunny Huggers must have won over game commission...... or must not be enough of them..

Are they on protected list..   some states their vermin like  oppossum , skunk, and groundhogs..  and can be shot at will..

This thread explains why I'm buying a 39A as soon as one becomes available in my region.

I can smell the frying, and taste the gravy.

Please pass the mashed potatoes, corn and biscuits.

My Dad and his 39 Carbine got half these, I got the other half with my Marlin 1892 round barrel rifle.  This was back in early November.  We covered a lot of ground that day and seemed to get one every few hundred yards or so, although Dad did get two off the same tree.  They sure were good, I am going to miss eating these little guys now that season is over here in Nebraska     Sad
