So far my '75 39A has been 100% reliable in the extraction/ejection department. However I have found WWG parts to be of very high quality and if my rifle ever developes problems with extraction, I wouldn't hesitate to replace it with one from them. Later,B.

My 76 mountie dont have any problems but It wouldnt be a bad thing for the aftermarket to make something for the newer ones. That way if I did buy one I could tinker with it

Yes, the extractors will interchange. That is what I described in my post above. There are three styles really old 1939-1958, old 1958-1972 and spring 1973 to date. The old and spring are interchangeable. I was not sure when the really old changed to the old.

Interesting.
I had never seen the old style before. I was only aware of the two styles I pictured.
Yes, if that extractor will fit in the newest style bolt, then it looks like an improvement to me.
Heck, if somebody would make a super-dooper version sorta like what Valquartsen does for the Ruger pistols, then there would most likely be a market for it.
It sure would be nice to have a "Slam Bam Thank You Ma'am" answer for all these problem rifles, that's for sure.

It always amazes me that a manufacturer will take an item that works well and replace it with another that is questionable because it is cheaper and put it into a $500+ levergun and market it. Winchester tried that same crap and sales fell until they were extinct.

The change was made in 1973 (37 years ago) to a $100 gun. The change seemed to work fine until recently so it maybe the quality of the metal the extractor spring is made of rather than the design of the extractor spring.

I realize a lot of them work well, but for sure there a lot that don't. My 2003 I tweaked a little and it works fine.
Thing being I have that 1966 it has been working well for over 44 years and I have put over 10,000 rounds through it the previous owner shot it a lot I don't know how many. It has never ever failed to extract. I have had some PMC ammo blow the base out and deform very badly and it still removed them.
The previous two piece design worked well also. Figure the 1958 design is over 50 years of reliability.
I would just as soon have WWG design something from what we have and make it better.

A guy came into my shop years ago with a M39 that needed an extractor (there wasn't one in it) some relatives gun which made the job even more difficult since I didn't know what it should look like. Marlin stated that they no longer carried that part (wasn't made anymore) but you could buy one from Wisners/Widners? Well I ordered one and when it arrived it was garbage(expensive garbage) it was made of POT METAL! The spring broke right away but was long enough that I could grind the tip down, pound it in and add some J-B WELD and still use it! It was way oversized and I spent hours filing, grinding and fitting the part. Got it to work 100% but I was not happy as it took so many hours to fit and don't know how it held up due to the POT METAL!
Hip
P.S. I was really shocked when I saw that the new ones are made out of cheap spring stock--------what does it cost to produce 1 penny !
