I don't know a lot about them but being a blaster fan of the Ruskie Mosin Nagants I was tickled to learn that the 1895 Winchester was manufatured in the Russian 7.62 X 54R caliber more than any other. Something like 300,000 of them. Made for the Russians and equipped with a stripper clip guide as well. AC

Anybody else feel free to way in on this if you'd like. Somebody once told the owner that his 1895 was worth more due to the fact that it is marked .30-03. Again, anybody feel free to comment. I just would like him to get fair value for it.
Been some time since I researched that, but there is a difference in neck length as I recall, and bullet bullet weight in the govt issued ammo. I know I had to search every dang old gun book I had, to come up with an actual case print for the early version. If I recall, I finally found it in Howes classic "gun smithing". I will look tomorrow.

I just sent my late friend's 1895 405 to auction for his widow.
I dont think they were either, but "common" knowledge at gun shows, some guys think they only came in a very few rounds. Like much "common" knowledge, that is wrong, and the 1895 did come in a slew of popular rounds at that time.

I looked, according to the print in the Howe book, the 30 03 is shorter from base to shoulder by .121, the neck length shorter than the 06 length by .010 or so. And that in consideration SAMMI specs, which may have changed slightly since 1906.

In any case, the modern 06 ammo would not even chamber in the 03 versions chamber, given that, and while the 03 ammo would perhaps chamber in the 06, the round will then typically headspace on the extractor, and the shoulder would simply expand forward with little if any danger.

I did not research the bullet weight issue, but as memory serves, that was different as well between the two rounds. And that had something to do with the existing "safe round fall" zones on the military test ranges at the time, if one chooses to believe that version of the story. Might even be true?
