catching soft shell turtles Fl way..

Try this sometime if you are in need of some soft shell turtles.
Take about a 4' section of 2x2 attach several treble hooks on all sides, drive the post into the ground approx 1/2 way. Bait it with chicken livers or whatever else you would like as long as it has some odor. The turtle will come to eat the bait and get hung on the treble hooks you attached to the pole. This works very well but.........DON"T GET CAUGHT!!!
Darn I am getting hungry for some now!!

How do you prepare turtle? Gutting, cleaning, cooking for those of us who do not know?

Cleaning a soft shell is fairly easy. Put the critter on his back and insert a long bladed butcher knife under the carapace. Cut around, holding the knife against the plate(carapace). When you get to the sides, tap the knife blade thru. Lift the plate to expose the excellent white meat. You will find chest muscles and legs. Cut these loose and enjoy.

And why don't you want to get caught? Is it the same reason not to hunt deer at night? I had turtle once as a child and was told I better eat it as it cost so much money along with frog legs. My brothers and I were taken on a cruise as kids and were forced to try "fancy" foods. As an adult, I tend to leave turtles alone as they are not pests and, I am not starving. I was feeding three soft-shell turtles today. They love bread. They were fighting the other turtles as well as fish for it.

Sounds like a great way to catch turtles. And coons, and possums, and coyotes, and whatever else comes along. Not exactly legal or ethical.

We got some floating traps we put in ponds for the snapping turtles. They are about 2' square with floats and a slick wire basket in the middle. There are places on the outside of the floats they can crawl up to sun. When they decide to go back in the water it is about a 50 / 50 chance as to what side they will flop off of, if it is the inside then he can't get out and you got him. Given enough time they will eventually go to the inside.
