    Help, Savage 99 in .308

I read the recommendations for the previous thread and I have found a 99 in .308 that they are asking $399. It sounds cheap to me for the gun which seems to be fair condition and in good working order. Am I correct? Fom

Re: Help, Savage 99 nin .308

Is it the 99E? They were the economy model, not fancy, but shot just as well. Any savage for $400 is a good deal...most can be cleaned up, smoothed up. I had a 99C in .308 for awhile ( I am an incurable gun trader/seller/buyer) that indeed was of higher quality than the 99E a friend had in .243....but I loaded some 100gr handloads for him, put a scope on it, and I could keep the shots around one inch @100! Spongy trigger and all! He, on the other hand, couldn't hit a gallo paint can at that distance...he was just a bad shot! So "beauty" (accuracy) is in the eye (hands) of the beholder (shooter).

I didn't look to see if it was an 99E but I do remember it has checkering if that makes a difference. Fom

Sounds like a deal, how's the bore? My dad had the 308, it was a great gun. Does it have a rotary mag, shell counter?

Sounds like a great deal to me... Around here (SC) the ones that I've seen go for $600+ for one in fair shape.

Hope it works out for you. As you most likely know, these guns were ahead of there time. Don't get me wrong, I love Marlins, but these model 99's are really special.

Re: Help, Savage 99 in .308

Well I did it again. It is a 99E but he was wanting to sell so I told him to make me an offer I couldn't refuse. He went and looked it up on his computer and came back and said $340 + tax is as low as he could go. I took it, about $366 and some change. It cycles ammo smoothly, the bore is excellent and the blue is good. The wood finish needs a little help and its got a cheap Bushnell 3X9 Sportview. I'm Happy. Fom

I'm not all that familiar with the Savage levers but I have handled one. They seem to be good rifles and it sounds like you got a good deal . I do know the .308 is a good round having owned a Marlin XS7 in it, Lonnie.
Middle aged, middle class, blue collar white guy. I hunt, fish, eat meat, wear the skins of animals for clothes and burn fossil fuels for fun and profit. Everything is my fault and I am OK with that.

A 99 E with good blue, no mechanical problems ia a good buy at your price, even if the wood is a little scruffy. Good job, enjoy, Jack
