The cutest little rifle, a nice example of a Marlin model 29 pump.

I couldnt resist, while picking up a beautiful 1895 (see it in the 45-70 forum). This little 29 was on the rack. It is as cute as a button although it needs some cleaning. It is mechanically up to snuff and fired five rounds without issue.

That is totally sweet. I was at a friends house and she had inherited some old guns from her grandmother. One was a 30-40 Krag and the other was a Marlin 22 pump just like yours. I made her promise not to sell it, unless it was to me

From what I have read , the 29 was made for a couple years in the teens. There were a couple other model designations of a similar 22 style pump before that as well. I just could not resist never having seen one before. The question I have for anyone with information is, what is the difference between the models I see with grooved forarms and ones like mine with smooth forearms? Any other information would be welcomed as I don't find much out there on these rifles.

Nice rifle.First thing DON'T fire any "High Speed" or "High Velocity" ammo in that old pump .Stick to the standard velocity(target)stuff.

There at least five of the Marlin 22 pumps 18-25(shorts)-20-29-37-38(hammerless) and 47.Models 18 and 25 were not true takedowns but had a thumb screw to remove the buttstock. The 20-29-37 are very similar but for barrel and tube length.I am not familure with the 38 but I don't think it was designed for high speed ammo either. Here is a picture of my 20 with a Marlin No.1 scope and my squirrel dog Shortyshortie 1.JPG

    Here's some info from Brophy's book (pages 453, 453-455):

The model 29 was made from 1912-17 (introduced in 1913). It's essentially the same as the model 20 except the 29 has a round 23-in barrel and smooth forearm, while the 20 has a 24-in barrel and grooved forearm.
